My daddy usedto play with the old Pickwick Band. Old Man Humphrey used to teach the band so I takenlessons with Professor Humphrey. Then I'd second line watching Johnny Dodds play withKid Ory. All them funerals and parades. Jack Carey, I'd sit and watch them. Just watch theclarinet player. I played B flat in the orchestra, E flat on the parade. Johnny played a B flathe never had no E flat Joe Watson played clarinet in the old Tuxedo Band. He had an E flatin the Tuxedo Band and a B flat in the orchestra. I used to follow him sometimes. None ofthem blow no clarinet like Johnny Dodds. That tonation was there (scats some music). Thattonation, oh!, that tonation. Yes, he had it. Like I play a funeral or a parade, get that tonationout of that E flat clarinet. That's the principle thing about playing. I played with theEureka Brass Band. I stayed in the Eureka Brass Band a long time. Then one night theyhad a rehearsal up there, Red Clark say 'We could get somebody to play as good as you orbetter. I say "Go ahead and get him." So I quit. So they got George Lewis to play withthem. They put this march up they called 'Longfellows 432', longfellows March'. Over theriver playing a funeral. Everything stops but clarinet (sings part of March). George Lewisdidn't know what to make, wasn't no "Doodle-doodle-on" there, you see. play what yousee there, alright. A fella says 'Wilson want to see you tomorrow". Want to see me aboutwhat?, "Oh man, you know that man can't read". I said I don't know a thing about that. Istayed with the Eureka Band a long time. I make up my own band, the Young Tuxedo. Ihad a fellow Uptown, they call Page on sousaphone. Had Albert Jackson on trombone. Ihad Joe Avery on trombone and 1 had my cousin on alto sax., Tillman. I had "Little Jim"on bass drum. Old man Cato I used on snare drum. And I took Landry, Rodgers and 'BigHead' Eddie Johnson to play in my band. Eddie Johnson worked at Werlein's. Come askme. "can we come with you all". Landry. Rodgers and Eddie Johnson. I took them in myband. I used to use Peter White sometimes on baritone. A mellophone and a baritonethat's a brass band. That's where all the harmony, all the music is, them peck horns. - Playa funeral, coming out with the body. Well, you'd play the funeral march all the way. Andget on the side and get ready to go take him out and bring him with you and play anotherfuneral march to bring him into the church. Get ready to come up with that funeral marchto bring him out of the church. As long as you've got that body you got to play a funeralmarch. Aker they dismiss that body they play a hymn. When they come on. they start toplaying rags. The first hymn is played when the body is gone, dismissed. Afterwards theycan play hymns and anything they want. - I don't believe the brass band will continue onlong couple a years. Looks like the youngsters don't want to learn no brass bands. Theydon't want to learn it. All they want to play is be-bop. Don't want to learn that lead on a6/8 march, don't want to play that.
