Thesefragile and colorful relics of disposable historypreserve a time of dramatic political and socialupheaval and personal change and growth. This exhibition is the first in Utah and one of the firstin the country to celebrate this unique American artform. Both the Smithsonian and the Louvre havecollections of 60s concert posters. In the summer of 1967 - "the summer of love" - aflourishing counter-culture was emerging in SaltLake City accompanied by a dramatically new styleof rock concert poster art. Geographically andculturally isolated from the already established SanFrancisco scene, local artists forged a unique anddazzling body of art that defined the Salt LakeSixties.Venues such as the Terrace Ballroom, theFairgrounds Coliseum (the "Dirt Palace"), Lagoon, the old Salt Palace and the Union Ballroom hostedconcerts by most of the legendary bands of thesixties: the Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix,It's A Beautiful Day, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, BigBrother and the Holding Company, JeffersonAirplane, the Grateful Dead and many, many others.local bands such as Holden Caulfield, Smoke BluesBand, Wishful Thinking, Wood, Spirit of Creationand many others were the opening acts for thenational bands that played Salt Lake. These localacts also performed at the smaller Salt Lake clubsand halls such as The Old Mill, Railroad Exchange,Abyssie, The Red Belle, The Crow's Nest, The TopHat, Junior's, and others. These posters were, and remain, a celebration of themusic, art and politics of the Salt Lake Sixties.Putting together this show has been a mixture ofhistory and nostalgia, art and politics, detective workand 20th century archeology - a reunion, acelebration, and a rebirth.
