5. What is improvisation?Improvisation (also called extemporization) is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to thestimulus of one's immediate environment. This can result in the invention of newthought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. This invention cycle occurs most effectively when the practitioner has a thoroughintuitive and/or technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within theimprovised domain.Who is Ansel Adams?Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 – April 22, 1984) was a legendary Americanphotographer and environmentalist, best known for his black-and-white photographs ofthe American West and primarily Yosemite National Park. For his images, he developed the zone system of photography, a way to calculate theproper exposure of a photograph. The resulting clarity and depth were characteristic ofhis photographs. His crystal clear images were also the result of his using the largeformat 8" x 10" film camera, which provided a maximum resolution, although it wasamong the most difficult cameras to use due to its large size, weight, set-up time, andfilm cost. However, it was typical of the lengths he would go to achieve his vision ofperfection. He founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston andImogen Cunningham, which was responsible for the founding of the Museum of ModernArt's department of photography. Adams' timeless and visually stunning photographsare constantly reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographswidely recognizable. And as a result, his images are among the most significant andfamiliar contributions to the history of photography.6.
