Neal seals theBTCC titleThe fight for the <strong>Dunlop</strong>-backed British Tour<strong>in</strong>g Car Championshiptitle went right to the wire at Silverstone, with Honda driver Matt Nealcom<strong>in</strong>g out on top of a five-way battle for the 2011 crown.Neal led the way go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the f<strong>in</strong>al rounds of the season atthe Home of British <strong>Motorsport</strong> and when others dropped out ofcontention, the championship fight eventually came down to a shootoutwith team-mate Gordon Shedden <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>al race of the season.Hold<strong>in</strong>g a six po<strong>in</strong>t advantage, Neal then beat the Scot on track <strong>in</strong>the season f<strong>in</strong>ale to become only the sixth driver to w<strong>in</strong> at least threeBTCC titles.“I’d like to say I was hardened to it hav<strong>in</strong>g won the title twice,but you never get used to the feel<strong>in</strong>g,” the new champion saidafterwards.Neal’s w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g marg<strong>in</strong> after a season where he won seven timeswas just eight po<strong>in</strong>ts over Shedden, while Honda also won theManufacturers/Constructors title and the Teams’ Championship.Despite eight victories, defend<strong>in</strong>g champion Jason Plato had tosettle for third <strong>in</strong> the stand<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> his normally-aspirated Chevrolet,with Mat Jackson and James Nash end<strong>in</strong>g the year level on po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong>fourth and fifth. Nash, driv<strong>in</strong>g a Vauxhall Vectra for Triple Eight, beatJackson to the Independents’ title after a season where he broke hisBTCC duck; cl<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g a maiden w<strong>in</strong> at Rock<strong>in</strong>gham.Triple Eight, multiple title w<strong>in</strong>ners while runn<strong>in</strong>g the factory Vauxhallprogramme, also picked up the Independents’ Team Trophy.Outside the five championship contenders, there were alsovictories over the course of the year for Andrew Jordan, Tom Chiltonand Tom Boardman; the latter jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Nash <strong>in</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g a BTCCw<strong>in</strong>ner dur<strong>in</strong>g 2011, albeit <strong>in</strong> a controversial fashion at Knockhill aftera clash with Plato while fight<strong>in</strong>g for the lead. It meant eight driversshared the 30 victories dur<strong>in</strong>g the season.In total, 34 drivers appeared on track <strong>in</strong> 2011, with 15 of thosebe<strong>in</strong>g first-time BTCC competitors. Amongst the rookie brigade,Frank Wrathall was best placed <strong>in</strong> the championship as he tooktwelfth place, mean<strong>in</strong>g he was also the highest-placed driver us<strong>in</strong>g acar built to the series’ Next Generation Tour<strong>in</strong>g Car Regulations, withfour podium f<strong>in</strong>ishes <strong>in</strong> the second half of the year.Five teams entered NGTC cars <strong>in</strong> 2011 but the number will<strong>in</strong>crease next year, with Honda Rac<strong>in</strong>g, Pirtek Rac<strong>in</strong>g and TripleEight amongst those who will switch to the Next Generationmach<strong>in</strong>es for 2012.
