Canada’s now verysubstantial and capable anti-submarine fleet and air squadronsalso played a prominent part in protecting the Allied invasionfleet as it crossed the English Channel. Althoughthe U-boats were unable to regain the initiative, they hadsignificant successes until the very end of the war. A stealthysnorkel U-boat sank the minesweeper HMCS Esquimalt justoff the entrance to Halifax harbour on April 16, 1945.The AchievementCanada’s role in the Battle of the Atlantic was large andsignificant. Starting from a tiny base of ships, aircraft andpersonnel, and an infrastructure of meagre proportions,Canada became one of the foremost Allied powers in theAtlantic war. By 1942, Canada was able to carry a majorshare of the defence of North American waters and, at the sametime, was Britain’s principal partner in the defence of transoceanconvoys. By 1944, Canadian forces had developed thestrength and capability to provide a significant contribution tothe British and Americans in other theatres of the war.21 The Battle of the Atlantic
