Archibald <strong>Swinton</strong> went ashore & was received(p) Swint. <strong>Family</strong> Recordsby the Rajah near the camp"Pallar his Dewanzer". He negotiated with the Rajah and Portraits atconcerning his support for attaching the French Fort. Kimmerghame.1759: Archibald <strong>Swinton</strong> having gained the notice of Col. (later Lord) Clive & Capt. (later General)Carnac, exchanged medical rank for ensigncy in Company's army service.1759: preserved an account of the events which led to Forde's victory on Nov. 25 in a battlewhich eliminated the Dutch from the scene in India (The Battle of Bederra).1759: received degree of M.D. from Uni of St Andrews;1760, Oct. 12: Archibald <strong>Swinton</strong>, ensign, had an illegitimate son, Robert <strong>Swinton</strong> (i)1761, Jan. 15: Archibald S. wrote an account of the "Battle of Gaiah" in which he tookpart. Shah Zanah on the necessity of surrender requested to be informed in whatmanner he would be treated. Archibald S. was sent by Major Carnac to express terms.Shah Zadah (Emperor of Hindostan) the accompanied Archibald to the English camp.1761: Lieutenant; 1763: Captain; firstly on Col Clives staff then aide-de -camp to Gen Carnac;1761, Dec. 20: "Battle of Gaiah": During this battle the driver of the elephant on which theShah Zadah was mounted was shot leaving the elephant driverless. His majesty, theShah Zadah was forced to quit the elephant. Among his belongings abandoned with theelephant was the Shah's writing desk. This was a gold lacquered base with silverink holders, bone handled pens & knives and carved ivory implements. Archibaldpreserved it & took it home to Kimmerghame. Eventually on Feb 7 the Shah surrendered to the English.1763: Archibald was placed in command of an expedition to Meckley (an area of theBrahmaputra, Manipur, Assam & Nth Burma), a part of the Kingdon of Ava (Burma).The purpose was to contract an alliance with the Meckley Rajah on behalf of the Company.Lieut. Archibald S. set out on May 21. On June 29 he learnt of trouble in Bengal & returnedto Dacca contributing to victory for the company there.1763, Nov.: Lieut Archibald S. was severley wounded in the left arm resulting in its loss at the elbow.After serving at Meckley-Dacca, Oudanalla, he took part in siege at Mongheer & got wounded inin the arm, went to Patna & was wounded again resulting in its lose.1764: rec. commendation of Governor & Council of Bengal for his actions in independant command.1764, Feb. 13: the men in <strong>Swinton</strong>'s battalion took up arms & threatened to join the mutiny againstthe compay over the lack of payment, but eventually returned to duty.Later still in India raised company of Sepoys which long bore his name.1765, Jan. 26: Capt. Archibald S. was with Lord Carnac who wrote to the company that he proposedappointing <strong>Swinton</strong> as his Persin interpreter, "there being no person in Bengal more capableof that employ", being also "superior in his knowledge of the manners of the Natives".1765, Aug.: after signing of the "Treaty of Allahabad", <strong>Swinton</strong> was sent to Dacca to take over the'dewani' from the then Naib Nazin, Jusseral Khan. This was his last piece of work in the Company.(Dewani: took over the administration of the provice)."Was a witness to the Grant of the Dewanee by Shah Alum, the Great Mongul" (f)1765, Oct.: Archibld <strong>Swinton</strong> retired from the Company. Emperor Shah Alum requested him to takea letter to the King of Gt. Britain requesting assistance in placing him on the throne of his fathers.1766, Jan.: departed from India taking several large Indian Jars, Chinese pictures painted onglass, a variety of ivory, silver & crystal handled arms, jewels and Persian books.He spent 3 months in London then went to Oxford where he assisted Munshy (Mirza) & Sir William Joneswith his Indian & Persian manuscripts. He then returned to his fathers house in Edinburgh.When he left Oxford & returned to Scot. he took Mirza Sheikh Ihtesammudin, the emissionaryfrom the Mongul Shiek, with him. In Mirza's writings he notes that he learned thatArchibald, when he trained as a surgeon, in order to learn the functions of veins & arteries,subjected a poor man to vivisection, which led to the mans death. In fear of his life, hethen fled the country by ship as a surgeon's mate onboard the ship. (h)1766: On his return home 2 brothers & 3 sisters were living at '<strong>Swinton</strong> House' with his parents.At this time Catherine gave him the Bible which origally came from Lady Mary Keith, &which had been given to Catherine by Annie Hope (p - p.107).1766: Received the freedom of city of Glasgow & Burgh of Fortrose; & later the town of Inverness.1769: purchased Manderston, Berwickshire, Sc.; & in1771 : KimmerghameBenjamin West included Archibalds portrait in his picture of "Shah Alum", the Great Mongul,conveying the grant of Deranny of Bengal, Behar & Orissa to Lord Clive in Aug. 1765".This treaty, concluded 1765, Aug. 16, was witnessed by Archibald <strong>Swinton</strong>, EdmundMackelyne & George Vanisttart.Was painted by West: portrait in possession of Earl of Windsor (c1880); another portrait atat India Office (?Lond.) appears in base of Clives statue outside India Office (a1);Was also painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, (in a red coat & epualettes); D. Martin & AlexanderNaismith (last port. with his family reprod. by George Sitwell Campbell-S. in 1928 (a1))1776: Married Henrietta CAMPBELL.
