What follows aremy suggestions of the must-seesights in a must-see city.10RioCariocas,It is admittedly a long way to gofor a long weekend, but I highlyrecommend Rio de Janeiro as a shortbreak destination.Daytime• Corcovado ("hunchback") is thegranite peak topped with the 38metre statue of Christ. Take thecog railway up the tropical sidesof the hill, then climb the stairs(escalators not yet completed!) fora breathtaking picture postcardview of the city.the residents ofRio, say that God createdthe world in 6 days, theseventh he devoted to Rio.Carolyn Foreman,<strong>Audley</strong>’s Latin AmericaProgramme Manager,believes they may have apoint.• Wander through the downtownarea – a walk with a knowledgeableguide will reveal many secrets instreets that are an interesting mixof high rise and colonial.• Take the open-sided tram to thebohemian district of Santa Teresa(the old barrio of Ronnie Biggs),browse the galleries and peer intothe crumbling colonial mansions.Sunset• Enjoy the views of Rio from the topof Sugar Loaf mountain, and seewhy it really is the most beautifulcity in the world.
