In October the Chikyusuccessfully completed Expedition 322, NanTroSEIZE Stage2: Subduction input, sampling the basaltic pillow lavas fromthe subsiding Philippine Sea Plate. Following the ShatskyRise Expedition, the JOIDES Resolution moved down to thesouthern hemisphere to undertake the Canterbury Basin andWilkes Land expeditions that were postponed from last year.Meanwhile, ESO is currently operating an MSP in the GreatBarrier Reef Environmental Changes project off Australia.Following a rather lean phase in the program, we have now hadan impressive total of ten drilling expeditions in 12 months!Closer to home, as EMA Director Catherine Mével pointsout on page 9, the ECORD Council meeting in Rome inNovember saw a number of new faces. This is a positivedevelopment, bringing new ideas into ECORD at a timewhen we are discussing the new program post 2013 and Iwould like to welcome them all to Council. However, at thesame time, remembering that ‘new’ faces mean that ‘old’ faceshave moved on to other assignments. One of these who wasparticularly missed was the UK delegate, Chris Franklin. Chriswas one of the founding members of ECORD in 2003 andheld the Chair <strong>for</strong> three terms during his tenure as CouncilMember. His knowledge, experience and attention to detailwere invaluable in Council. I would like to thank Chris <strong>for</strong>his dedication and contributions to ECORD and wish him allthe best in his new assignment.One other ‘old hand’ who is moving on - into retirement -is Dan Evans the Science Manager of ESO (pages 2-3). Thesuccess of the mission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>m concept is in a largepart due to Dan’s untiring ef<strong>for</strong>t and dedication, and I takethis opportunity to thank him on behalf of Council and towish him all the best in his retirement. Council has recognisedthat the success of the MSP concept has given an additionaland important <strong>European</strong> dimension to IODP and is activelyplanning <strong>for</strong> another two MSP expeditions be<strong>for</strong>e the end ofthe current program.In fact, the success of the MSP concept has encouraged newproposals to IODP in areas such as recent climate changeand natural hazards hitherto regarded as inaccessible to theprogram. One of the fundamental questions <strong>for</strong> ECORD inthe new program will be the balance between contributing tothe co-mingled funds and ensuring participation <strong>for</strong> <strong>European</strong>scientists in JOIDES Resolution and Chikyu expeditions, andfinancing and running MSP expeditions. I feel that both cancontribute greatly to the scientific goals of the program andshould be equally pursued.One thing is <strong>for</strong> certain; the current IODP program is backon track delivering the science that only comes from oceandrilling. And a rich schedule of drilling is still planned tocomplete the current phase of the program. Participationin the program is important <strong>for</strong> the science community inevery contributing country and scientists, especially youngones who can carry the torch <strong>for</strong>ward, should be given everyencouragement to submit applications to the expeditions andthus experience at first hand this unique science program.Nigel Wardell, ECORD Council Chair, October 2009 toMarch 20102. In the last issue of the ECORD Newsletter wementioned that the New Jersey Shallow Shelf (NJSS)Expedition Onshore Science Party had just started at thebeginning of November. Ursula Röhl provides a full reportof the OSP below and Albert Gerdes describes some of theoutreach activities that took place while the scientists werein Bremen. NJSS Staff Scientist Dave McInroy provides anupdate on the progress made by the scientific team since theOSP ended.The Onshore Science Party of the New Jersey Shallow Shelf Expedition.The Great Barrier Reef Environmental Changes (GBREC)Expedition was due to start about the same time that theNJSS Onshore Science Party was taking place, however dueto a change in the vessel that was contracted to carry outthe coring, the GBREC expedition was postponed. Thework finally got underway in February 2010, when theESO team and members of the science party left Townsville,Queensland to embark on their 7 week expedition. A fullreport on the expedition and the OSP, which is scheduled <strong>for</strong>The Greatship Maya, drillship of the GBREC Expedition.July 2010, will be included in the next ECORD Newsletter.At the time of writing, the expedition has about another7-8 days to go. Despite some technical difficulties and someunfavourable weather, the Co-Chief Scientists Jody Websterand Yusuke Yamamoto report that they are pleased with thecoring results that have been obtained.A significant change in management of ESO has recentlytaken place. At the end of April 2010, Dan Evans will retirefrom the British Geological Survey. Dan has been ScienceManager with overall responsibility <strong>for</strong> co-ordination ofESO since it was established in 2003. Dan’s expertise andcompanionship will be greatly missed by all of his colleaguesin ESO, and throughout the broader IODP community, andwe wish him well in his retirement. Dan has agreed to remainas an adviser to ESO, similar to the arrangement made with<strong>for</strong>mer ESO Operations Manager Alister Skinner, so we willcontinue to see him occasionally and will be able to draw onhis vast experience in IODP.Dan’s departure hasresulted in a slight reorganisationof themanagement structureof ESO; as of March 15,day-to-day managementand the ESO ScienceManager role wastaken over by DavidMcInroy. Dave has alsobeen involved in ESOsince its inception andhas taken part in theACEX, Tahiti and NewJersey MSP expeditions - the latter two as Staff Scientist.Dave has also represented ESO on a number of IODP/ECORD committees and so is well known to the oceandrilling community. To assist Dave during the transitionalphase following Dan’s retirement, Robert Gatliff has beenappointed as ESO Chair. As Head of Marine Geoscience,Robert is a senior member of the BGS management team- he has more than 30 years experience in marine scienceand spent a large part of his early career overseas. Robertwill assist Dave in the co-ordination role within the ESOconsortium and will represent ESO at some of the IODPCommittees, such as the Science Planning Committee, andwill be involved in IWG+. The new Science managementteam is expected to hit the ground running and will of coursebe assisted by the very experienced ESO Managers withresponsibility <strong>for</strong> the Bremen Core Repository, <strong>European</strong>Petrophysics <strong>Consortium</strong> and the Operations, Data andOutreach Managers at BGS.Alan Stevenson, ESO Outreach ManagerDavid McInroy, ESO Science Manager


4ECORD Newsletter # <strong>14</strong> - May 2010 - www.ecord.orgA Farewell from Dan EvansTime has passed very quickly since 2003 when I beganmy role with ESO and attended my first IODP meetingwhich was an initial Implementing Organization meetingheld at the unlikely location of Bozeman, Montana. Onlanding in Minneapolis and telling the US ImmigrationOfficial that I was going to attend a meeting about oceandrilling his response was ‘‘I’ll be real impressed if you candrill the ocean from Bozeman, Montana!’’Dan Evans, ESO Science Manager, at the first Onshore ScienceParty - Artic Coring Expedition - held in Bremen.ESO was thrown in at the deep end to implement its firstmission-specific (MSP) expedition in 2004. This was thelogistically complex Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX), ahigh-risk coring expedition to a previously undrilled andice-covered part of the Arctic <strong>Ocean</strong> where the nature ofthe sub-seabed was virtually unknown. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately,despite the success of ACEX, it is unlikely that anotherscientific drilling expedition to the ice-covered Arcticwill take place <strong>for</strong> a few years, and indeed the pioneeringaspect of ACEX is emphasised by the fact that to myknowledge only the one comparable expedition that hastaken place since (and that was led by industry) used thesame specifically converted drilling vessel and leanedheavily on the operational experience of ACEX.Subsequently ESO has been able to overcome a list ofwide-ranging obstacles too great to mention in order tosuccessfully implement the Tahiti Sea Level, New JerseyShallow Shelf and Great Barrier Reef EnvironmentalChanges expeditions. Each has used a different plat<strong>for</strong>mand although as I write the GBREC offshore expeditionis not completed, it is clear that MSPs have broughtan important new dimension to both the scienceand operations of scientific ocean drilling, as well asintroducing the concept of Onshore Science Parties. Ibelieve that this success is now being recognised in theincreasing number of MSP proposals in the system and ina continuing demand <strong>for</strong> MSPs in the New Program thatwas evident from discussions at INVEST.Despite the challenges, it has been a fascinating journey(albeit not quite finished yet) and it has been a privilegeto work with such knowledgeable and committed ESOcolleagues at BGS, the University of Bremen and at the<strong>European</strong> Petrophysics <strong>Consortium</strong>. It has also beena great experience to work with Catherine Mével, theDirector of EMA, and indeed with the ECORD Council,ESSAC and within the whole IODP structure. I takeaway a lot of good memories of places and particularlyof people.I would like to extend every good wish <strong>for</strong> the future tothe IODP in general and particularly to ESO and thoseof you participating in whatever way under the ECORDbanner.Dan EvansPrograding clino<strong>for</strong>ms and Oligo-Miocene eustatic variations:First results of the New Jersey Shallow Shelf ExpeditionThe New Jersey margin, because its geology is known and is easilyaccessible, is an especially attractive location <strong>for</strong> documentingsedimentation during times of large sea-level change. Equippedwith the mission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>m L/B Kayd, IODP Expedition313 attempts to make fundamental discoveries concerning theworkings of this complex and fundamental set of Earth processes.Despite its importance, knowledge of the basic amplitudes andrates of sea-level variations on timescales of tens of thousands tomillions of years is surprisingly limited. Expedition 313 helpsaddress this deficiency in the way endorsed by several studygroups: by sampling key facies across the prograding deposits ofa passive continental margin, such as New Jersey.IODP Expedition 313 took place from April 30 to July 17, 2009on the shallow shelf between 46 and 60 kilometres off the NewJersey coast. The associated Onshore Science Party took placefrom November 6 to December 4, 2009 at the IODP BremenCore Repository and laboratories in the MARUM building onthe campus of Bremen University in Germany.The overriding reason to return to the New Jersey margin wasto recover the lowstand sediments that are missing in the coastalplain, have been dated at slope boreholes, and can be tied to thearrangement of composite siliciclastic packages seen in seismicprofiles. Continuous cores from Holes M0027A–M0029A will


ECORD Newsletter # <strong>14</strong> - May 2010 - www.ecord.org 5provide estimates of eustatic amplitudes, a testable record ofeustatic variations, and the opportunity to evaluate modelsthat predict the nature and distribution of facies in passivemargin strata.Holes M0027A–M0029A targeted upper Oligocene to middleMiocene seismically imaged prograding clino<strong>for</strong>ms that weredeposited in inner–middle neritic paleodepths (based on coevalonshore strata deposited in nearshore/prodelta settings). Priorto the Expedition, we obtained excellent seismic profiles ofthese clino<strong>for</strong>ms at locations that are most likely to record thefull amplitude of sea-level change: directly landward of and nearthe toes of the clino<strong>for</strong>ms (i.e., across the clino<strong>for</strong>m inflectionpoint). Modern water depths in Holes M0027A–M0029A areholes, as well as in several older intervals (sometimes severaltens of metres thick) in Holes M0027A and M0028A.The value of a drilling transect strategy was demonstrated bythe many thin (10–20 m) topset units drilled in one or bothof Holes M0027A and M0028A that could be matched byage, facies, log, and/or seismic correlation to the toeset strataseaward of clino<strong>for</strong>m rollovers. An additional purpose ofdrilling a transect of holes was to improve the chance of morenearly continuous accumulation in a basinward, deeper settingthan is found in the more landward, shallower holes; initialgeochronology shows this has worked exactly as planned.Mollusk fragments and benthic <strong>for</strong>aminifers have thus far providedmore than 100 87 Sr/ 86 Sr age dates. Calcareous nannofossils areEw9009 Line 1003 through Holes M0027A, M0028A, andM0029A (yellow subseafloor columns). Generalized locationsof ODP boreholes onshore and offshore (gray columns) andpreviously proposed but undrilled Sites MAT-4A to MAT-7A(white columns) are also shown. Several key surfaces (coloredlines; K/T boundary = ~65 Ma, o1 = ~33.5 Ma, m5 = ~16.5Ma, m4 = ~<strong>14</strong> Ma, m3 = ~13.5 Ma, and m1 = ~11.5 Ma) havebeen traced from the inner shelf to the slope. The clino<strong>for</strong>m shapeof sediments bracketed by these uncon<strong>for</strong>mities is thought to be theresult of large sea-level fluctuations (Vail and Mitchum, 1977).34–36 m, a <strong>for</strong>tunate "crossover" depth between being toofar landward <strong>for</strong> detailed control on sequence geometry (i.e.,thorough seismic control on land is not possible) and too farseaward <strong>for</strong> af<strong>for</strong>dable commercial drill rigs. Holes M0027A–M0029A were optimally located to sample several clino<strong>for</strong>mpackages across a 22 km transect.Cores and seismic lines being discussed by Greg Mountain (Co-ChiefScientist), Ken Miller (Modeler/Stratigraphic Correlator) and DonaldH. Monteverde (Modeler/Stratigraphic Correlator) during the OnshoreScience Party.often abundant and provide ages largely consistent with Srisotope ages. Dinocysts and pollen prepared prior to the OSPare common in many intervals, and additional studies willbe beneficial; the presence of distinctive pollen assemblagesrestricted in time are present in all three holes, potentiallyproviding narrow and unexpected correlation markers. Shorebasedpreparation of planktonic <strong>for</strong>aminifers showed they arecommon in some intervals, and post-OSP analysis will provideadditional age control. Although additional demagnetization oflow-susceptibility sediments is required to measure remanentinclination values, certain fine-grained intervals have shown thatmagnetochronology will assist in our final age control.The two overarching goals of Expedition 313 were to (1) recovera complete and measurable record of Oligocene–Mioceneeustatic variation and (2) evaluate models of sedimentation onsiliciclastic continental shelves during a time of known eustaticoscillations. Achieving both goals will require considerableshore-based analysis and integration among disciplines, and itis too early to gauge how successful we will be. Nonetheless,there are several positive indications.Despite penetrating the Miocene/Oligocene boundary in onlyHole M0027A, the key target interval of middle to lowerMiocene sediments was cored in all three holes with 80%recovery. Core quality is generally very good to excellent;poorly lithified sand was a drilling and coring challenge in thepost-middle Miocene section above roughly 200 mbsf at allBenthic <strong>for</strong>aminifer assemblages are found in fine-grainedintervals in each hole, providing an indication of water depths(relative sea levels) at the time of deposition. Thanks to excellentcore quality, primary sedimentary structures (e.g. low-anglecross-bedding indicating a shoreface environment, storm bedspreserved as fining-upward sharp-based sands, etc.) providean independent measure of paleobathymetry. Vertical faciessuccessions across surfaces and within sequences yield trends inpaleodepths that provide broad-scale indicators of depositionalenvironments and suggest a range of sediment transportmechanisms.Gamma-ray response was logged through the pipe <strong>for</strong> 98% of the2065 m of drilled hole, vertical seismic profiles were acquired in83%, and a combination of five logging tools deployed in openFirst results of NJSS Expedition continued on page 9


6ECORD Newsletter # <strong>14</strong> - May 2010 - www.ecord.orgUrsula RöhlNew Jersey Shallow Shelf Expedition completedOnshore Science Party held at BCRThe IODP Expedition 313 New Jersey Shallow Shelf (NJSS) wasthe third mission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>m (MSP) expedition organised andcarried out by ECORD. In the summer of 2009 three boreholes45 to 67 km off the coast of New Jersey were cored in ~ 35 mwater depths with the aim of providing new in<strong>for</strong>mation on datingthe late Paleogene - Neogene depositional sequences, estimatingcorresponding amplitudes, rates, and mechanisms of sea-levelchange, and evaluating sequence stratigraphic facies models thatpredict depositional environments, sediment compositions, andstratal geometries in response to sea-level change (page5). Duringthe offshore phase of the NJSS expedition onboard the L/B Kayd,three primary scientific activities were conducted: ephemeralproperties (pore-water chemistry, microbiology, physicalproperties) were measured and/or selected samples were preserved;core logging and downhole logging was carried out; and near realtimecore description was per<strong>for</strong>med on cores through the linersand on core-catcher samples. The 1311 m of recovered cores (with80% recovery), covering the period ~10 - 35 Myr of Earth history,were then sealed and stored in temperature-controlled containersand shipped to Bremen, Germany.Scott Renshaw (ESO Core Technician) and Katharina Hochmuth (CoreLaboratory Technician, student) during core splitting(© ECORD/IODP).Due to the nature of MSPs, e.g. space and time restrictions coresusually are not split at sea and the main part of the science has tobe conducted onshore. There<strong>for</strong>e the third IODP MSP OnshoreScience Party (OSP) was held from November 6 to December 4,2009, in the IODP Bremen Core Repository (BCR), located inthe MARUM building, Bremen University.The science party was welcomed at an icebreaker party in the hotelon the evening be<strong>for</strong>e the start of the OSP. The first day was used<strong>for</strong> science meetings, presentation of offshore results, review of coreprocessing and post-cruise science (including sample requests), andinspection of and training at the facilities. In contrast to standardIODP/ODP sampling parties, it was another extended experienceto split cores and also acquire all the data <strong>for</strong> the IODP minimumand standard measurements during the following four weeks.About 65 people (scientists and operator personnel) worked intwo shifts processing the New Jersey cores. All participants workedhard, helped each other, and came up with solutions as required.This was a critical aspect in making this onshore party highlysuccessful and to satisfactorily complete it within the schedule, aswas the enthusiasm of everybody involved.Discussion in the core lab (Johanna Lofi, Greg Mountain, Dayton Dove (StaffScientist in Training) and Jean-Noël Proust.The participants used different labs in the MARUM building, someof which were devoted to office space and specific laboratories (e.g.,report writing, microscopy, and physical properties measurementson discrete samples). The main labs were used <strong>for</strong> extensive coredescription of the freshly split cores including the visualisationsystem CoreWall <strong>for</strong> core images and data, digital imaging,color reflectance measurements, split-core logging, petrophysicalanalyses, detailed core sampling, and stratigraphic correlationincluding core - seismic integration. Further analytical laboratorieswere available in the same building (i.e., micropaleontologyand physical properties laboratories) and the Department ofGeosciences (specifically the geochemistry, paleomagnetics, andpalynological laboratories) in the campus.Overall it was a very well functioning system, and the work flowwas very smooth.The scientists stayed in a hotel in the city center, which, in contrastto a ship environment, allowed them to spend their off-shift timeenjoying a variety of social and cultural events (including theBremen Christmas market) as well as excellent Bremen restaurants,all of which offer very good German beer. The scientists receivedtheir samples soon after returning home, and are busy nowworking on their individual analyses. New key results regardingthe long-term climate and sea-level history of the planet will soonbe available.The IODP Bremen Core Repository (BCR) has been operating<strong>for</strong> the past almost 16 years and now archives a collection ofpresently <strong>14</strong>2 km of deep-sea sediment from 83 expeditions.More than two thousand scientists have visited the repositorysince it was established in 1994, often cooperating in week-longsampling meetings of the shipboard investigators. So far morethan 619,000 samples have been taken by the visitors and BCRstaff and distributed world-wide.Ursula Röhl, Laboratory and Curation Manager

My aim was toteach the importance of sediment cores as valuable climatearchives. During the project I placed particular emphasison the ICDP expedition to lake El´gygytgyn in 2009, aswell as self-cored lacustrine sediments from a pond inWittstock and additional ODP cores that I brought tothe school. Besides the study of sediments from differentclimatic regions represented by three ODP core sectionsfrom Western Spitzbergen, the Eastern Mediterranean andoffshore Namibia, I also showed and discussed the replicacore of the ODP core containing the K/T-boundary inmy introductory lesson on the first day of the project.My intention was to catch the students´ attention andawaken interest in sediment cores. I assumed that theextinction of the dinosaurs and its cause was familiar tothe approximately 60 students, who have been involvedin that project, and that it would be really impressive <strong>for</strong>the students to "directly observe" the sedimentary resultof the meteorite impact that led to the mass extinction.My purpose was to impress on the students that majorand important events in climate and Earth history arerecorded in sediment cores. To my mind, the replica corecompletely fulfilled my intention. The students were veryinterested and engaged in the discussion. They seemed tobe surprised and astonished at the fact that the sedimentcore reveals processes that were working 65 Ma ago. Theschool project was a complete success. It is always a challenge <strong>for</strong> ESO to organise amission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>m expedition and this particularone has accumulated a number of unexpected problemsresulting in successive delays. I am particularly pleasedthat the vessel has finally reached the Australian shores.Hopefully, it will bring exciting results on sea-levelvariations during the last deglaciation, complementingthe Tahiti expedition.An important step <strong>for</strong> the program was the consolidationof the two the IODP-MI offices (Washington DC andSapporo) into a single office in Tokyo (page 20). I hadthe opportunity to visit the new office last March. It isnicely located in the Tokyo University campus. We areall grateful to the new IODP-MI President, KiyoshiSuyehiro, to have organised this move that went quitesmoothly. The new office will reach its full speed as soonas the staffing is completed.Meanwhile, ECORD has just experienced two importantchanges at the management level.First, the ESO Science Manager, Dan Evans, is retiringthis spring (pages 3-4). Dan played a major role insetting up ESO and in implementing the first four MSPexpeditions. He largely contributed to making ECORDa key player in IODP. Dan and I worked very closely andparticipated in countless meetings around the world. It ishard to imagine that he will not be around any more. Iam sure he will enjoy his free time, although I understandhe may still give a hand if necessary. With Dan leaving,the ESO management has been slightly modified (pages3 and 20). Secondly, my assistant Rosa Bernal-Carrerahas moved to another position. I really enjoyed workingwith Rosa, and appreciated her dedication, efficiency andpermanent good temper. I wish her well in her new joband I welcome Mohammed Benchikh who took over herposition in March.Although the program has still more than three years togo, preparation <strong>for</strong> the next phase is actively being pursuedunder the leadership of IWG+ (page 16). At the ECORDlevel, the Council decided to organise an independentevaluation of the ECORD scientific achievements usingocean drilling, and of future prospects in a new programof sub seafloor science. This evaluation should beavailable within a year. It will help the funding agenciesin Europe and Canada make their decision regardingtheir participation in the new phase. The last years ofIODP will also be extremely important to facilitate therenewal. The validity of the MSP concept has been fullydemonstrated through the first four expeditions. ECORDis planning to implement two more be<strong>for</strong>e the end ofthe program. The refitted JOIDES Resolution has nowsuccessfully returned to regular activities and we expect,in particular, major advances in our understanding ofthe deep biosphere. The MSCL providedcontinuous measurements of core properties and core-wireline logcorrelation to confirm accurate ties between these data. Excellentquality seismic reflection images provide stratal geometry that,with accurately depth-registered physical characteristics from logsand MCSL data, will lead to confident seismic-core correlation.These results suggest we will be able to date the lower to middleMiocene section with accuracy sufficient to compare breaks inthe record with times of sea level-lowering predicted by the agesof δ 18 O glacio-eustatic proxy. We are confident we will be able tomatch these breaks to seismic sequence boundaries that have beentraced to drill holes dated on the slope and to the shoreline whereextrapolation to sediments in the modern coastal plain have alsobeen dated in drill holes. We already know we have recoveredsediment (mostly in our most basinward Hole M0029A) notfound previously in the coastal plain, presumably because ofnondeposition/erosion during times of sea-level lowstand at thoseupdip locations. Dating and matching sediments to the seismicrecord is only part of the objective; incorporating estimates ofpaleobathymetry, compaction history, and basin subsidence willbe needed to backstrip this transect and arrive at estimates <strong>for</strong>the magnitude of eustatic (global) sea-level change. These consist of small and short-term grants,which should cover travel and lab expenses. ESSAC hasstarted to review these applications.ESSAC has been active in the very successful ESFMagellan Workshop Series. Two ESF Magellansponsoredworkshops were held in late 2009 (pages 12-13).A workshop on “Pliocene Climate” was held in Bordeaux,France (October 23-25, 2009; Convenors Johan Etourneauand Nabil Khelefi), and a workhop on “IODP <strong>Drilling</strong>of the ‘Shackleton sites’ on the Iberian Margin” was heldin Lisbon, Portugal (November 9-10, 2009; ConvenorFatima Abrantes).During EGU 2010 in Vienna, we will organiseEuroFORUM 2010, an Interdivision Session dealingwith major achievements and perspectives in ocean andcontinental drilling. Sönke served as German andlater ECORD representative in the SiteSurvey Panel (SSP) <strong>for</strong> almost 6 years. Heis survived by his wife Gabi Uenzelmann-Neben, present ECORD representative inthe SSP, and his son Leif (15).Sönke began his academic career as ageophysics student at the Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel, where hegraduated in 1993. In the same year hewas employed at the Federal Institute<strong>for</strong> Geoscience and Natural Ressources (BGR)in Hannover. He took part in numerous marineexpeditions, often as chief scientist. His scientificachievements, especially those focussing on the SouthAtlantic and Antarctic passive continental margins,are internationally respected milestones. Sönke was atrue and perfect networker. His technical and logisticalknowledge made him the perfect member of scientificcommissions such as the DFG Senate Commission<strong>for</strong> <strong>Ocean</strong>ography, the R/V Sonne review panel, andcommissions planning the R/V Maria S. Merian andthe I/B Aurora Borealis. Consequently, Sönke moved toBremerhaven in 2009 to lead the logisticsgroup of the Alfred Wegener Institute <strong>for</strong>Polar and Marine <strong>Research</strong> (AWI), withresponsibility <strong>for</strong> all of the ship logistics ofAWI. After 16 years of commuting betweenhis home in Bremerhaven and Hannover,this was not only a logical step in his career,it also gave Sönke the opportunity to spendmore time with his loved family. He was sohappy about this change in his life, whichthen lasted <strong>for</strong> less than a year…Sönke was a modest, sometimes quiet butalways helpful colleague. He loved a coldglass of Northern German Pils beer, had a great senseof humour, and probably was never among the first toleave the traditional pub crawls in harbour after cominghome from a month-long expedition. It was a great opportunity to bringtogether sixty-three participants from eleven countries specialisedon Pliocene climate. During the three days, a series of talks andposters focused on six different, but complementary topics:(1) oceanic gateways (Panama and Indonesia Seaways),(2) changes in Plio-Pleistocene atmospheric CO 2,(3) changes in the North Atlantic Circulation and the impact ofMediterranean outflow water on the <strong>for</strong>mation of North AtlanticDeep Water (NADW),(4) North Pacific and Southern <strong>Ocean</strong> reorganisation,(5) tropical/subtropical Pacific conditions (continentalprecipitation/aridification, sea surface temperatures, upwellingactivity, …),(6) modeling the Pliocene climate.Following these presentations, seven discussion groups weretasked with reviewing the main causes <strong>for</strong> and consequences ofthe major climate switch occurring between the warm Plioceneand the cold Pleistocene, and to draw new directions <strong>for</strong> futureresearch, including drilling targets to be integrated in the IODPobjectives. The discussions gave rise to unanimous consensus:more data spanning the last 5 million years are urgently neededto better understand the evolution of seafloor and sea-surfacetemperatures, sea level, monsoon systems, the intertropicalconvergence zone (ITCZ) position, water-mass origin,biological production, ocean mixing, and CO 2levels across theWind-eroded land<strong>for</strong>ms in the Yadan National Geological Park,Gansu Province (China), resulting from the dryness of a paleolakeduring the Pliocene-Pleistocene climate transition. Decreasing regionalrainfall is supposed to be tied to the Himalayan uplift associatedwith changes in the atmospheric pattern (photo J. Etourneau).Plio-Pleistocene climate transition, and what the role of theseparameters may have had on controlling the global climatecooling. After three days of conclusive discussions, severalparticipants suggested that a workshop on Pliocene climateshould become a regular event. This would be an excellentopportunity to improve the interactions between data andmodellers. The workshop also strongly encouraged participantsto submit proposals <strong>for</strong> future IODP expeditions targetingcritical locations (e.g. Western Equatorial Pacific) to understandPliocene climate changes.

This group’s interest is to establisha borehole observatory (i.e., “CORK” and instrumented hole)in the region of the fault that is believed to have caused thedevastating Lisbon earthquake and tsunami in 1755. Given thesocietal relevance and importance of this geohazard objective,we invited seven scientists with tectonic interests to join theworkshop.Following oral presentations and discussion of the possiblestrategies, the consensus was to submit separate but parallelproposals because of the different “drilling readiness” of the twoobjectives. At national level, they conductoffshore explorations and geologicaland geophysical investigations incontinental margins and basins using amultidisciplinary approaches to addressthe main questions in geosciences. Theirtasks comprise assessments on policyof socio-economic relevance such asenvironmental and climate changes,geohazards, and natural resources. Ourscientific approach also tackles intricateonshore-offshore correlations, whichare of special interest when studying theenclosed or semi-enclosed basins thatbound the Iberian Peninsula. Currentareas of research include the WesternMediterranean (from the Alboran toTyrrhenian Seas), the Atlantic <strong>Ocean</strong>(north and west off Iberia), the Arctic,the Antarctic, the Pacific and the EasternIndian oceans.Spain joined the 'saga' of internationalocean drilling programs in the 1980swhen OPD started. <strong>Drilling</strong> Spanishterritorial waters during ODP Leg 103(Galicia Margin) and ODP Leg (161,Alboran Sea) led to pro-active support <strong>for</strong>strong involvement in ODP of Spanishinstitutions. During the transition fromthe ODP to IODP, Spain joined withother 'small countries' from the <strong>for</strong>merECOD to bring a single <strong>European</strong> voicewithin IODP. Spain has there<strong>for</strong>e beenpart of IODP within ECORD since thestart of the <strong>Consortium</strong> in December2003.Spanish scientists have participated insome interesting IODP Expeditionsby taking up a berth (according to ourmembership quota) onboard the JOIDESResolution (Exp. 306-North AtlanticClimate-2, Exp. 307-Modern CarbonateMounds: Porcupine <strong>Drilling</strong>, Exp. 308-Gulf of Mexico Hydrogeology, Exp.321-Pacific Equatorial Age Transect II- Juan de Fuca, Exp. 318-Wilkes Land),the Chikyu (Exp. 3<strong>14</strong>-NanTroSEIZEStage 1: LWD Transect), and the MSPGreatship Maya (Exp. 325-Great BarrierReef Environmental Changes). However,Spain benefits from IODP not just in thenumber of allowed berths, but also byother research and learning opportunitiesthat the IODP offers to our scientificcommunity. 16 ECORD Newsletter # <strong>14</strong> - May 2010 - www.ecord.orgCatherine MévelTowards a New Phase of <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Drilling</strong>:the Role of IWG+The International Working Group + (IWG+) was set upby IODP Council in January 2009 to prepare <strong>for</strong> the newphase of ocean drilling. The vision of the IWG+ is to frame a newmultinational program architecture that promotes delivery of the bestpossible and most exciting and relevant science to the broad sciencecommunity and the public through scientific ocean drilling.IWG+ is co-chaired by NSF, MEXT and ECORD. Its membersrepresent all funding agencies currently participating in IODP orinterested in participating in the future program.IODP-MI, the Implementing Organizations, representatives of thescientific community (SASEC Chair and Vice-Chair), and others asrequired, contribute to the meetings as observers.IWG+ has met three times and is making excellent progress, althoughthere are still important decisions to come. Four major issues havebeen identified and are currently being discussed:• Multinational program architecture and financialcontribution,• Program management and money flow,• Science advisory structure (SAS) and• Transition to the new programme.Major decisions have already been made. In the new phase, plat<strong>for</strong>mproviders will cover all costs associated with operating their plat<strong>for</strong>ms.No more SOCs and POCs! But the Central Management Officewill continue to carry out integrated activities such as planning,core curation, data management, publications etc. To smooth thetransition, IODP-MI will be maintained as the CMO <strong>for</strong> two tothree years into the new phase.Different groups are looking in parallel into the Science AdvisoryStructure: IWG+, the Triennium review committee appointedby IODP-MI, a subcommittee of SASEC. Although their finalconclusions are not yet available, they all converge in the samedirection towards simplification. Hopefully, a decision on the newSAS will be made next June.Organising the transition period is also crucial. To be ready to startdrilling in FY<strong>14</strong>, a number of planning activities need to start soon.It has been decided to set up the new SAS soon as possible, likely inthe fall of 2011, while the current SAS panels will be progressivelyphased out. Existing proposals are the intellectual wealth of theprogram. Obviously the new phase will have to start with projectsalready in the system. But to be considered in the new phase, existingproposals will have to fit with the new science plan.But if deciding the structure of the new program is essential, themost important aspect is of course the science. Following the verysuccessful INVEST meeting, a Science Plan Writing Committee(SPWC) has been appointed to deliver a focused science andimplementation plan. Based on nominations from the sciencecommunity, IODP-MI and SASEC finalised the membership thatreceived the approval of IWG + (table below). The new science planwill be constructed on the basis of ship time availability: 5-10 monthsof Chikyu riser drilling, 8-12 month of JOIDES Resolution and oneMSP expedition per year. It will emphasise societal relevance andidentify specific high priority riser projects <strong>for</strong> the Chikyu.Mid-2011 will be a major step <strong>for</strong>ward. The next program structureshould then be decided, and the new science plan should be available.This will allow the funding agencies to make a decision on theirfuture participation. ECORD member countries will be invited tosubmit an expression of interest <strong>for</strong> participating in the new phasebe<strong>for</strong>e the end of 2011, and the plan is to sign the new ECORDMemorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2012.The overall schedule is very tight. ECORD Newsletter # <strong>14</strong> - May 2010 - www.ecord.org 17Report on a 2008-2009 DLP LecturerPeter CliftI was very happy to have the chance to act as a touring“Distinguished Lecturer” <strong>for</strong> ECORD <strong>for</strong> the period of late2008 to early 2010. Not only wasthis a great honour, but was a terrificopportunity to meet activists in theocean sciences, and especially theIODP community, across <strong>European</strong>d even further afield. At the startof my lectureship I had little ideahow much travelling and talking Iwould end up doing on the subjecton monsoons, mountain buildingand the <strong>European</strong> contribution toIODP. Indeed I had little idea howmuch time I would spend at the St Johns Harbourairport. This year the DLP ruleshad changed slightly compared tothe first round of DLP lectures in2007-2008. ECORD had mandatedthat my fellow lecturers and I shouldvisit non-<strong>European</strong> universities aswell as those in the consortium,provided those expenses were met bythese hosts. As a result I was able topublicize the drilling program, the<strong>European</strong> contributions to IODPand climate-tectonic science beyondour own community to those in the Utrecht canal sceneUnited States, in Malaysia, in Chinaand in Australia. By the end of thetour I had given my presentation 29times, including 20 times in ECORDcountries, which now includes ourfriends in Canada, a fact of whichI had been only vaguely aware ofbe<strong>for</strong>e getting my first invitationfrom the very friendly folk in St.Johns, Newfoundland, a city I hadnot visited since disembarking from Dinner in LisbonODP Leg 152, way back in 1993. Atleast geologically St. Johns is in Avalonia and on the <strong>European</strong>side of the Iapetus suture, which is more than can be said ofmy home institution! Because the travelling was necessarily timeconsuming I tried hard to talk in two institutions <strong>for</strong> each journeyI made, where I could arrange this with neighbouring universities.Because I visited so many places it is not really feasible to recountthe many gracious hosts andinquisitive audiences I encountered,although I will cherish memories ofthe good people I met <strong>for</strong> a longtime. As well as stimulating sciencethe DLP programme was certainly achance to eat some interesting food,spanning curries in the Februarydrizzle of Liverpool, to pizza in thewarm October light of Florence,hearty sausages in chilly Novemberin Jena, baked cod in exotic Lisbonand 'nouvelle cuisine' moose in thebright but frigid Ottawa March.Attendances at the presentations wereencouragingly high and studentsin particular seemed enthused totake part in future IODP cruises,perhaps even some in the Indian<strong>Ocean</strong> if and when that drillingoccurs. One particular benefit <strong>for</strong>me was the chance to air views toa really large and diverse audienceand to hear questions that I hadnot heard in the specialist sessionsat the normal large meetings. Aswell as thanking all the hosts whogave up so much of their own timeto make the visits a success, I wantto thank the excellent staff in theECORD offices and especiallyBonnie Wolff-Boenisch and JennyLezius <strong>for</strong> getting the paper workdone so quickly and advising mevery patiently with expense <strong>for</strong>msthat were then processed with greatefficiency. During Integrated <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Drilling</strong> Program (IODP)expeditions, these measurements are made downhole in theborehole and on core, enabling multiple scales of investigationin the same geological environment. The <strong>European</strong> Petrophysics<strong>Consortium</strong> (EPC) is responsible <strong>for</strong> the acquisition, qualityassurance and quality control of the downhole logging data andthe core petrophysics measurements on mission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>m(MSP) expeditions organised by <strong>European</strong> <strong>Consortium</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ocean</strong><strong>Research</strong> <strong>Drilling</strong> (ECORD). Once collected, EPC are involvedwith data interpretation and the development of collaborativeresearch programmes that directly benefit the scientific objectivesof IODP.The <strong>European</strong> Petrophysics <strong>Consortium</strong>EPC involves three <strong>European</strong> universities, Leicester (UK),Montpellier (France) and Aachen (Germany), with >25 yearsof experience in petrophysics research combining boreholegeophysics, laboratory experiments and geology. More than 250publications in major peer-reviewed journals have been generatedthrough sailing over 50 scientists on ODP & IODP expeditions.Launched in 2003, the consortium provides a <strong>European</strong> focus <strong>for</strong>logging within IODP. EPC links into the international Logging<strong>Consortium</strong>, lead by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory(US) that has been in existence since 1992, which also includesthe University of Tokyo (Japan). Our combined petrophysicalexpertise is available to all scientists involved in IODP.Dr Sarah Davies, at the EPC central office based at the Universityof Leicester, is responsible <strong>for</strong> management of the consortiumand works closely with Head Scientist, Dr Philippe Pezard, atMontpellier and scientists, Professor Christoph Clauser and DrFrank Bosch, at Aachen. Each <strong>Research</strong> Associate has their own research interests,including palaeomagnetism, siliciclastic sedimentology, oceanichydrothermal systems, porosity and permeability and life inextreme environments. Secific research projects are addressedthrough the application and interpretation of petrophysical data.In summary the EPC provides high-level scientific and technicalsupport to the IODP and ECORD across the range of highlyvariable environments drilled by the non-riser and mission-specificplat<strong>for</strong>ms, including:• Petrophysics Staff Scientists and Petrophysicists to MSPExpeditions,• Logging Staff Scientists to the JOIDES Resolution,• Expertise <strong>for</strong> development of tailored downhole logging andcore petrophysics programmes,• Dedicated equipment to acquire downhole logging data,including slimline geophysical borehole tools,• Dedicated equipment <strong>for</strong> core logging and discretemeasurements, including Geotek Multi-Sensor Core Loggers(standard and XYZ), a Geotek P-Wave Frame and a ThermalConductivity Probe,• Data calibration and quality control,• Evaluation and interpretation of downhole log and corepetrophysical data.Downhole Logging Data Acquisition on MSP ExpeditionsThe Petrophysics Staff Scientist, in liaison with the Co-ChiefScientists, the Staff Scientist and the Science Party, develops thedownhole logging and core petrophysics programme to meet theparticular scientific objectives of an MSP expedition and con<strong>for</strong>mto the IODP minimum measurement policy. EPC then contractsthe appropriate logging services.EPC Montpellier has undertaken the downhole logging on threeMSP expeditions, Tahiti Sea-Level Expedition 310, New JerseyShallow Shelf 313 and Great Barrier Reef Environmental Changes325. The slimline tool suite (ca. 50 mm in diameter) includesspectral gamma ray, sonic, induction, acoustic imager, opticalimager and magnetic susceptibility probes (Fig. 2). Deploymentof slimline tools was a first <strong>for</strong> ODP/IODP during the TahitiExpedition. For New Jersey Expedition 313, in addition to theEPC logging tools suite, EPC worked with a team from theUniversity of Alberta to complete the vertical seismic profilingexperiments required.Why is downhole logging data important?Logging data provide a continuous dataset, allows physicalproperties to be studied in-situ in the borehole and provides acrucial link between core, core petrophysics data and regionalgeophysical surveys. When combined with other geological data,downhole log measurements enable a full characterisation of thegeology, ‘fingerprinting’ of key surfaces and packages and, wherecore recovery is lower or discontinuous, core-log integration canprovide in<strong>for</strong>mation on the characteristics of the missing succession.Vertical seismic profiling experiments enable key seismic reflectionhorizons to be tied directly to an individual borehole.

EPC is responsible <strong>for</strong> a range of core measurementsworking closely with Bremen personnel and the Science Partypetrophysicists. For the New Jersey Shallow Shelf Expedition 313,EPC was responsible <strong>for</strong> more than ten different measurementson around 1300 m of recovered core. Measurements on wholecores, prior to core splitting during the OSP, normally includenatural gamma radiation, using EPC Leicester’s Geotek MSCL-XYZ and discrete thermal conductivity measurements, using asystem provided by EPC Aachen. Once the cores are split, colourreflectance spectrophotometry, high resolution line scanning anddiscrete measurements, including p-wave velocity and moistureand density, are undertaken.In the Tahiti Sea-Level Expedition 310, high-resolution, mmscale,optical and acoustic images combined with continuousborehole geophysical measurements enabled correct core depthsto be established ensuring accurate sea-level reconstructions.The optical and acoustic image logs revealed the highly porouscharacter of the <strong>for</strong>mations drilled and cored. Continuous spectral gamma logsenable assessment of lithologies in lower core recovery intervals.Acoustic image logs provided early in<strong>for</strong>mation on the visualcharacteristics of key surfaces be<strong>for</strong>e the core was split (Fig.3).Core Petrophysics on MSP ExpeditionsOffshore core logging operations are carried out by an ESOPetrophysicist, from EPC, who works alongside petrophysicists fromthe Science Party. EPC Leicester supplies a Geotek Multi SensorCore Logger (MSCL-S) system and MSCL-S measurements includegamma density, P-wave velocity, non-contact resistivity and magneticsusceptibility (Fig.4). The Petrophysics Staff Scientist completes anydata processing required, the final depth shifting and correlation ofrepeat runs within a borehole and works with the ESO Petrophysicistto integrate the downhole logging and MSCL data sets.Fig. 4: The Geotek MSCL-S, housed in the Petrophysics container, provides highresolutionwhole-core logging data including gamma density, P-wave velocity,non-contact resistivity and magnetic susceptibility (photo Frank Bosch).Why take petrophysical measurements on core?Core petrophysics data are used in tandem with the downholelogging and other geological data to help identify key boundariesand trends in individual boreholes, enable correlation betweenboreholes and <strong>for</strong>mations. These data are used to developlithostratigraphic frameworks <strong>for</strong> carbonate, siliciclasticand igneous successions. During New Jersey Shallow ShelfExpedition 313, the gamma density was used in the preliminaryidentification of key seismic reflectors in the recovered core.Magnetic susceptibility and spectral gamma ray data, measuredduring downhole logging, were directly compared with trendsmeasured on the recovered core ensuring a precise and calibrateddataset.The FutureAt each EPC centre, researchers work within dedicated facilitiesusing a range of software packages to optimise the evaluationand interpretation of downhole logging data and facilitate corelogintegration. EPC applies IODP and archive ODP, downholelogging and core petrophysics data in a range of collaborativeresearch projects, including using log and physical propertiescharacterisation <strong>for</strong> the evaluation of facies, sediment compositionand ocean crust lithostratigraphy. EPC will continue its activeinvolvement with the IODP operations and research that haverevolutionised our view of Earth history and global processesthrough ocean basin exploration.Sarah Davies, EPC Co-ordinator
