<strong>of</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Chester</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
<strong>will</strong> accomplish this year?<br />

b. Mentor southern <strong>Chester</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> non-pr<strong>of</strong>its OR,<br />
c. Save neighbors in need<br />
money on prescriptions OR,<br />
d. Provide household items<br />
to families in crisis OR…<br />
e. All <strong>of</strong> the above and more!<br />
The right answer is that, in addition to raising and distributing<br />
funds to support crucial non-pr<strong>of</strong>it programs in southern<br />
<strong>Chester</strong> <strong>County</strong> serving residents in need, we <strong>do</strong> “all <strong>of</strong> the<br />
above and more.” This year, 32 programs <strong>will</strong> be funded that<br />
move people in crisis to stability and, ultimately, independence.<br />
These programs, vetted by our intense allocation process,<br />
have proven to be both cost-effective and able to produce<br />
measureable results in the people whose lives are changed.<br />
But we <strong>do</strong> more than just<br />
act as a funding agent…<br />

Mentoring agencies to become better means more effective<br />
programs for southern <strong>Chester</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Coaching<br />
agencies to develop measureable goals for their work,<br />
teaching their boards <strong>of</strong> directors about the responsibilities<br />
<strong>of</strong> board governance, and helping them keep their<br />
financial houses in order are just a few <strong>of</strong> the ways we<br />
work to develop stronger, more efficient agencies. UWSCC<br />
provides free workshops for non-pr<strong>of</strong>its to develop their<br />
organizations to the highest standards <strong>of</strong> governance.<br />
UWSCC is in the best position to see the state <strong>of</strong> needs<br />
throughout southern <strong>Chester</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Where there are<br />
gaps in human services, we are developing programs<br />
to address those gaps. One <strong>of</strong> those gaps is the lack<br />
<strong>of</strong> transportation options for people without their own<br />
cars. Getting to needed medical and dental appointments<br />
can be impossible for some <strong>of</strong> our residents.<br />
<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> is working collaboratively with other funders to<br />
develop our Ride to Health Initiative and address this need.<br />
The director <strong>of</strong> a local agency was<br />
overwhelmed by the amount <strong>of</strong> time<br />
she was spending on financial reports<br />
and the numbers still weren’t accurate.<br />
<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> staff spent time on site<br />
developing more efficient and correct<br />
reporting. Today, the much happier<br />
and less harried director reports she<br />
now can spend more time developing<br />
programs to address the needs <strong>of</strong><br />
the stream <strong>of</strong> clients at her <strong>do</strong>or.<br />
We also act as a distributor <strong>of</strong> discounted prescription cards<br />
through our partnership with FamilyWize. Over 4,600 local<br />
southern <strong>Chester</strong> <strong>County</strong> residents have saved $108,000<br />
on prescription drugs since we started this program.<br />
We partner with Bed, Bath, & Beyond to give out household<br />
goods to needy families. Since June <strong>of</strong> 2011, we have<br />
distributed through our partner agencies over $100,000 in<br />
bedding, linens, and curtains to clients who need them.<br />
Lastly, UWSCC functions to encourage volunteerism<br />
in our residents and pair up volunteer needs with the<br />
manpower to get the jobs <strong>do</strong>ne. This means providing<br />
people to push wheelchairs so seniors with disabilities<br />
can enjoy Longwood Gardens, building ramps, or creating<br />
murals and painting interiors to beautify non-pr<strong>of</strong>its.<br />
We believe volunteering benefits the volunteer as much, if<br />
not more, than the recipient <strong>of</strong> services. Over 300 people<br />
have become community volunteers this past year and<br />
helped better our community through their efforts.<br />
A single mother <strong>of</strong> two with no insurance<br />
burst into tears when the <strong>do</strong>ctor<br />
prescribed yet another prescription for<br />
her two-year-old. A resourceful nurse<br />
at the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>-sponsored clinic<br />
handed her one <strong>of</strong> the prescription<br />
cards distributed by <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>. Today,<br />
that sickly two-year old is thriving.

A survivor <strong>of</strong> <strong>do</strong>mestic violence is<br />
now in her own apartment with her<br />
three <strong>you</strong>ng children. Her caseworker<br />
stopped in to our distribution site to<br />
pick up air mattresses, comforters,<br />
towels, and a curtain for the bathroom<br />
win<strong>do</strong>w for her. Her children <strong>will</strong> not<br />
have to sleep on the floor tonight.<br />
