FIGURE 3 : % Engineering trainees received 2003Nationality: The majority of studentsparticipating in the <strong>IAESTE</strong> exchange arecitizens of <strong>IAESTE</strong> member countries. Some arefrom non-member countries and are studyingabroad at educational institutions co-operatingwith <strong>IAESTE</strong>.In 2003, 230 students with differentnationalities to the sending country receivedplaces on the programme. Of these 42 werefrom the following non-member countries:Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Guatemala, Iraq,Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Korea, Libya, Malaysia,Mauritania, Moldova, Morocco, Palestine,Panama, Senegal, Singapore and Vietnam.Five <strong>IAESTE</strong> countries exchanged 86 studentsdirectly with non-members countries thatincluded Algeria, India, Kuwait, Morocco,Niger, Peru, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.FIGURE 4 : % change in Engineeringdisciplines between 2002-2003Participating Employers and EducationalInstitutions:In 2003 there was a decrease in the number ofemployers who offered traineeships but therewas a significant increase in the number ofparticipating educational institutions whichreflects the increase in the number of cooperatinginstitutions participating in theexchange in recent years.<strong>IAESTE</strong> is pleased to acknowledge thecontinued support of employers andeducational institutions in 2003.FIGURE 5 : % Science trainees received 2003Work experience positions on offer in2003The duration of the available positions can beseen in Tables 1 and 2.Most of the training takes place in the periodMay to September and coincides with theNorthern Hemisphere vacation period. In theSouthern Hemisphere, opportunities areavailable between October and April. Morethan 47 of the member countries are now in aposition to offer long term trainingopportunities and 17 members and cooperatinginstitutions offer training throughoutthe year.The majority of work placements areexchanged during the <strong>Annual</strong> Conference inJanuary on a bilateral basis but thanks to thedevelopment of the <strong>IAESTE</strong> IntraWeb theexchange can continue after this meeting. Newand unused offers can be put on the IntraWebat any time by members and co-operatinginstitutions and this ensures that <strong>IAESTE</strong> canaccommodate student placements andemployer offers as they arise.Categories of Offers: <strong>IAESTE</strong> classifyplacements as Research and Development (D)indicating work of a laboratory nature;Professional (P) is used for professionalactivities, practical design work and similar;Working environment offers (W) indicate workin the industrial area relevant to the student’sbackground and category (X) covers nonspecificoffers.The non-specific (X) offers can be general officejobs, language offers and similar.
