newsICAN Blacklists Three Studentsfor Examination Malpracticehe Institute has blacklisted three students caught cheatingTduring the November 2012 Professional Examinations. The threestudents are Mr. Olumide Ayodele Ayeni, Mr. Olusesan Ibirogbaand Mr. Tolulope Oluwasogo Oluronbi.On 20th of November 2012, during November 2012Professional Examinations at Ilesa Centre, Ayeni was caught withwritten materials related to Financial Reporting and Ethics paper hewas writing. He was made to write his own statement which uponinvestigation found him guilty. The exhibit and the invigilator'sreport were also evidences against him.Ibirogba was also caught on 21st of November 2012, during theNovember 2012 Professional Examinations at Ibadan Centre, withsome pieces of paper related to Management Accounting paper hewas writing. He was made to write statement which uponinvestigation found him guilty. The exhibit and the invigilator'sreport were also evidences against him.Oluronbi was also caught on 21st November 2012, during theNovember 2012 Professional Examinations at Ibadan Centre, withwritten materials that were related to Advanced Audit andAssurance paper he was writing. He was made to write statementwhich upon investigation, found him guilty. The exhibit and theinvigilator's report were also evidences against him.After due investigations, the Council of the Institute decidedthat the three students should be blacklisted and banned from all theInstitute's examinations. They were deregistered as candidates andhave all the papers taken during the November 2012 dietprofessional examination cancelled.Mutual Benefit AssuranceSeeks Partnership with ICANne of the Insurance giants in the country, Mutual BenefitOAssurance is seeking partnership with the Institute of CharteredAccountants of Nigeria (ICAN). This was made known by theManaging Director of the company, Mr. Akin Ogunbiyi when thePresident of ICAN Mr. Adedoyin Owolabi paid a courtesy visit tothe corporate head office of the company on Ikorodu Road, Lagos.Ogunbiyi who thoroughly explained the activities of thecompany said Mutual Benefit is seeking partnership with ICAN tocreate value and improve empowerment in the economy. He saidICAN is known for its high standard and integrity especially in theway it conducts its examinations.His words: “I doff my cap for ICAN because since inception, ithas never recorded any examination leakage and I always wonder ifthe examinations are conducted by Nigerians.” He said it was for thisreason the company is seeking to partner with ICAN as well otherprofessionals for assistance. He said that the 18 year old companywith 250,000 Policies and staff strength of 5,000 has grown into aconglomerate and is IFRS complaint.Mr. Owolabi who appreciated the warm reception and honourdone him congratulated the Board and Management of the companywhich has grown from a very humble beginning to group ofcompanies.“I congratulate the Board and Management for the good workyou are doing. Some companies clamp down because of hazards ofthe economy, Mutual is forward looking”, he said. He howeverassured the company of the Institute's support.ICAN Takes Catch Them Young Initiativeto Calabarhe Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) hastaken its campaign for professionalism in Accounting to theTnext level it tags “Catch Them Young Initiative”. This was declaredby the 48th President of the Institute, Mr. Adedoyin Owolabi duringhis courtesy visit to one of the oldest schools in the country, HopeWaddal College, Calabar which was founded in 1895 and also ownedand run by the Presbyterian Church.The ICAN President who was on a 4-day visit to Calabar &District Society of ICAN, acknowledged the good work being doneby the Principal, Staff and the entire Management of the school asreflected in the manner they are managing and moulding children,thereby producing great leaders of the nation.Owolabi declared that one of the reasons for his visit was topartner with the school so as to mentor and introduce their students tothe “Catch Them Young” initiative which the Institute introducedfew years ago to assist young school leavers while awaitingadmission into higher institutions.“It is our desire to mentor and groom young school leaversthrough our catch them young programme which has yielded goodresults in places like Ikorodu, Epe and so on,” he said.In his response, the Prelate/Moderator of General Assembly ofthe Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. E.N. Uka, appreciatedthe visit and commended the activities and standard of ICAN. Headvised that the Institute should continue to maintain its highstandard of integrity and make efforts to check corruption in thecountry. He further extolled the studious performance of CharteredAccountants.His words: “since our accountant became a member of yournoble profession, his performance has improved tremendously. Hissuggestions are usually the final in the area of finance”.Polytechnic Offers CharteredAccountant-Graduand Automatic Employmenthe Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has given automaticTemployment to Mr. Imoh Benson Chigbo, a graduate of accountancyfrom the Polytechnic, for qualifying as a Chartered Accountantbefore graduation.The Rector of the Polytechnic, Elder Allwell Abalogu Onukaogudisclosed this while addressing the 48th ICAN President, Mr.4ICAN Students’ Journal, January/March, 2013
He explained to the students that ICAN offers scholarship tooutstanding students from Accountancy department and otherdisciplines who are interested in writing ICAN exams. He alsoannounced that Chidi Ajaegbu Educational Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, established by the 1st Deputy VicePresident, has offered to offset tuition, registration andexamination fees of all Accountancy department students of AbiaState Polytechnic willing to write ICAN examinations.Adedoyin Owolabi and hisentourage who paid him a courtesyvisit on Thursday, January 31, 2013.Onukaogu said, “I quickly offered Mr. Benson anautomatic employment judging that he did not only graduated fromthe accountancy department of the school but was also the onlygraduand in his set who qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Thiswas a way of encouraging others to be the best and nothing else inwhatever they do”.He noted further that the school has since ensured good supportfor students and lecturers alike that have shown interest in ICANProgrammes.During an interactive session with the students of theAccountancy department of the Polytechnic, ICAN Presidentcounseled that only hard work, perseverance and sacrifice will earnthe students ICAN certificate.His words, “now is the time to make sacrifice so as to earn yourdesired future. You must burn your night candles and ignore alldistractions like clubbing, illicit relationships, expensive habitsand the likes which can deny you your ICAN certificate”.Abia State Governor Approvestwo Parcels of Land for ICANThe governor of Abia State, Dr. Theodore Orji has promised toapprove two parcels of land, one in Aba and the other in Umuahiafor the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) assoon as all necessary papers get to his desk.The governor gave this promise during a courtesy call to hisoffice by the 48th President of the Institute, Mr. Doyin Owolabi onhe partnership ofthe Cross RiverTState Governmentwith the Institute ofChartered Accountants ofNigeria (ICAN) has indeed paid off as the training of ICANstudents through the Training Centre has produced about 69Chartered Accountants in the last five years.The Acting Governor of Cross River State, Mr. EfiokCobham disclosed this in his office in Calabar while playinghost to ICAN President, Mr Doyin Owolabi at a briefhanding over ceremony of the Training project tagged“Students' Special Project” bythe ICAN President who visitedthe government house. TheActing Governor said thepartnership with the Institute ishighly appreciated.
