Lucerna XXII, 7Box appealIn 1998 and 1999 excavations wereconducted at Grateley South, Hampshire aspart of the Danebury Environs RomanProject. The excavation revealed an ovalenclosure of 1tt century Bc-ltt century ADdate and several Roman buildings. Both IronAge and Roman finds were recovered andinclude items of jewellery such as bracelets, finger rings and pins, and iron tools.Of some interest are the remains of twoboxes, one with iron fittings and the otherwith copper alloy. From a grave came agroup of joiners dogs, double spiked loops, aloop-headed pin with ring and a lock plate, while from a pit were recovered a group ofrectangular and curving plates and studs. The studs are of tripartite construction withan iron shaft and domed copper alloy headfilled with a white metal. This filling iscurrently being analysed by Dr PeterNorthover of the Department of Materials,Oxford University. Of interest is the dentatedecoration at the edge of the rectangularplates (Fig 1, opposite). A guick review ofthe literature has revealed little in the way ofcomparatiye decoration, and I would be verygrateful to learn of any similar examples.Emma HarrisonInstitute of Archaeologyi6 Beaumont StreetOxfordem m a . h a rrison @ a rch . ox. a c. u kREVIEWThe Romano-British 'small town' at Wanborough,Wil$hire, by A S Andersoo, J S Wacher & A PFitzpatrickBritannia Monograph 19, 2001 380 pF, 11 plates,L26 figsThis monograph presents the results of sixseasons of excavation by three site directorsat Wanborough, a small town on ErminStreet between Silchester and Cirencester. The excavations took place between 1966and L976, the earliest, by Ernest Greenfieldand lohn Wache r, in response to threatsfrom road building, the latest, by ScottAnderson, iD advance of a flood water lagoonscheme.Three main periods were detected, alldivisible into phases. Period 1 dates to Nero-Vespasian, when Ermin Street was built, anda single wooden building. There arenumerous brooches dating to this period, and indeed some pre-dating it, as well as theodd piece of military metalwork. In the }nd and early 3'd centuries (Period Z)the settlement took off, with numeroustimber buildings constructed, and one withstone foundations. A mansio, picked up byaerial photographs, lies to the east of theexcavated area, and may have been thenucleus of the settlement.Period 3 dates from AD 230 to 400+, a timewhen several buildings with stonefoundations (but probably timbersuperstructures) were erected both frontingonto Ermin street and at some distance14
