<strong>GEORGE</strong> <strong>MASON</strong>MEN’S SOCCER INFORMATION GUIDEMen’s soccer was one of the firstvarsity sports to be offered when the then-George Mason College began its athleticprogram in the late 1960s. Since then, it hasbecome one of the most successful programsamong the 22 NCAA Division I sports currentlyoffered at Mason.In the 42-year history of GeorgeMason soccer, the program has a record of 406-289-81 for a winning percentage of .575. ThePatriots have posted at least 10 victories in 25 ofthose seasons, including 14 in a row from 1980-93, and they have finished a season nationallyranked 10 times (1981, ‘82, ‘84, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88,‘90, ’92, ’96 and 2008) in the last 26 years. AtGeorge Mason Stadium, the team’s 5,000-seathome field which opened for the 1982 season,the Patriots have a sparkling record of 156-73-27 (.662 winning percentage).The program’s most successful periodbegan in 1979, its first at the NCAA Division Ilevel. Coach Richard Broad led the Patriots to a9-9 mark that season and improved to the tuneof a 10-4-3 record and a berth in the ECAC-South championship game in 1980.After another impressive record of12-2-4 in 1981, a season in which Mason wasnationally ranked for the first time, the programkicked into high gear in 1982. The Patriotswon their first 18 games and were rankedas high as sixth in the nation (the program’shighest national ranking ever) before losingto Virginia, 3-2, before 4,500 fans at the newstadium. Mason came back to avenge that lossin its first-ever NCAA Tournament game with a1-0 victory over the Cavaliers at Scott Stadiumin Charlottesville before falling to eventualnational runner-up Duke in the quarterfinals,2-0. Mason’s final record of 19-2 set a schoolrecord for victories in a season.Broad, who finished his nine-yeartenure with an overall mark of 88-53-17, saw thePatriots post a 15-4-3 record in his final seasonof 1984. Mason made its second appearance inthe NCAA Tournament that year, the first of sixpostseason appearances by the Patriots in a spanof seven years.Gordon Bradley joined the programas head coach in 1985. He immediately led thePatriots to a record of 18-4 and a NCAA firstroundvictory over Virginia, 1-0, before fallingto eventual national runner-up American in thesecond round. Mason set a school record with80 goals that season. In 1986, the Patriots againwon an NCAA first-round game with a 2-1victory over Maryland in overtime, but lost toLoyola in the second round.Bradley, who retired after the 2000PROGRAM HISTORYseason with a 16-year mark of 183-113-35,guided the Patriots to other NCAA appearancesin 1987, ‘88 and ’90. A six-year drought endedin 1996 with Mason defeating Virginia, 1-0,in the first round before falling to eventualnational champion St. John’s. Mason’s mostrecent NCAA Tournament appearance was in2008, when current head coach Greg Andrulisguided the Patriots to a win over Penn in the firstround, 1-0, before falling to eventual nationalchampion Maryland in the second round.Mason also appeared in the national tournamentin 2006, taking a 1-0 loss to Bucknell in the firstround. The Patriots have an all-time record of5-10 in 10 NCAA Tournament appearances.Since the inception of the ColonialAthletic Association in 1984 (it was known asthe ECAC-South for the 1983 and ‘84 seasonsonly), Mason has been one of the most dominantprograms in the conference with a league recordof 117-74-26 (.599 winning percentage) and fiveshared or outright titles in 26 years. The Patriotsalso have tied for the regular season crowntwice and advanced to the CAA Tournamentfinals five times.In addition, a total of 74 playershave been selected to the All-CAA first orsecond teams, which includes athletes whoPATRIOTS IN THE POSTSEASONhave received the honor more than once. JohnO’Hara, Martin Dunphy, Mark Pulisic, IanCarter and Eduardo Lima earned All-CAA FirstTeam honors three times and Mike Reynolds,Fred Thompson, Sam Sumo, Joseph Addo,Greg Franzke, Tamir Linhart, Rich Kotschauand Scott Thelen each were named to the squadtwice. In addition, Anthony Noreiga garnereda first team nod in 2005, a feat repeated byKwame Adjeman-Pamboe during the Patriots’2008 CAA Championship season. GoalkeeperSean Kelley capped his outstanding careerwith a first-team selection last season. Linhartreceived CAA Player of the Year honors in 1992,as did John Ferrandino in 1995. Noreiga wasnamed CAA Defender of the Year in 2005. Also,O’Hara (2001), Damian O’Rourke (2002) andSean Kelley (2006) earned Rookie of the Yearlaurels.Mason also can boast of six All-Americans -- Henry Castaneda, Colin Kerr,Reynolds, Sumo, Addo and Linhart.
