It’ll be murder there, where the tip dugin so deeply before. <strong>The</strong> skin there’s like raw beef.”Katherine watched, aghast, as Pamela pointed the rod rightat the indicated area, drew the tip back over her shoulder, andsnapped the stick with astonishing strength into the bulge ofbare flesh. <strong>The</strong> thwack of the cane was loud and Katherinepaled at the energy put into the stroke: she had not expected abeating would be so hard. It was painful to watch; she couldn’timagine enduring such a stroke.<strong>The</strong> attacked flesh writhed as pain rippled through thecurved mound, rebounding to its original shape after a fewseconds of quivering agony. Katherine blinked in alarm asshe wondered if she were imagining it or if the collection ofcrimson weals in that area were suddenly enlivened, brighteningto magenta. <strong>The</strong> angry lines pulsed and rippled likeliving snakes.THWACK! <strong>The</strong> cane descended again, right into thesame sulcul groove, and this time Katherine had no doubt:
