<strong>AFS</strong> WWII Ambulance DriversLast PostRichard W.Christian(1919-2010)ME 16Robert W.Curry(1920-2010)ME 2, FFCDonald S.McCreary(1925-2010)CM 93, IB 59-TRichard Witwer Christian passedaway November 9, 2010, in GrandRapids, MI. He was born October 4,1919. After graduating from WoodlandHigh School and obtaining hisundergraduate degree at MSU, heserved with the British Eighth Armyas an <strong>AFS</strong> Ambulance Driver in NorthAfrica. Returning to the States in1943, he joined the U.S. Army andfinished the war in the India-China-Burma theatre. His long career as amanager, appraiser loan officer, andbanker ended with retirement in 1983.Richard was preceded in death by hiswife of 55 years, Ruth, in 2005. He issurvived by three sons, a daughter,and seven grandchildren.Robert W. Curry died September25, 2010. He attended SewickleyAcademy, then graduated fromGreenfields Academy in Tucson, AZ.He was a Psi-U at Kenyon Collegein Ohio but left to join <strong>AFS</strong> in NorthAfrica and was present at the battleof El Alamein. He then joined theU.S. Army and worked in intelligencein Europe during the remainder ofWWII. After the war, he worked in theoil industry until moving to Tucsonin 1971. He is survived by his wife of61 years, Catharine, his two sons anda daughter, six grandsons, and threegreat-grandchildren.Donald Sprague McCreary died October2, 2010. He was born in Nantucket, MA,and grew up in Cleveland, OH. He wasa 1949 graduate of Kenyon Collegein Gambier, OH, and was awarded aFulbright scholarship that allowed him tostudy at the University of Florence, Italy.Mr. McCreary worked in the USDA’sFood and Nutrition Service for morethan 20 years before retiring in 1985.Before joining the USDA, Mr. McCrearywas a mission chief in Poland andYugoslavia for CARE. He was recognizedby the Yugoslav Red Cross for his reliefwork during the 1963 earthquake thatdestroyed much of the Yugoslav city ofSkopje. He is survived by his wife, Janet,a son, a daughter and a brother.Jaime P.Salinas(1925-2011)FR 4James E. C.Walker(1926-2011)CM 99, IB 59-TGrant B.Myers(1918-2009)ME 4Jaime Salinas, an outstanding figureof the Spanish editorial world of thesecond half of the 20th century, diedJanuary 25, 2011, at 84, in Iceland.Jaime Salinas was born in Maisón-Carrée, Argelia, in 1925. During theSecond World War, he served inEurope in the ambulance corps ofthe American Field Service (<strong>AFS</strong>).He played a key role in Seix Barral inBarcelona, a publishing house, and hewas co-founder of Alianza Editorial.In 2003 he won the Premio Comillasde Biografia for his memoir, Travesías.Memorias (1925-1955).James Elliot Cabot Walker, MD, passedaway on January 6, 2011. He receivedhis BA from Williams College, an MDfrom the University of Pennsylvania,and an MS in Hygiene from HarvardUniversity. After serving with <strong>AFS</strong>, healso served in the U.S. Army during theKorean Conflict. In 1965 he becameone of the founding fathers of thenew UConn Medical Health Center.He enjoyed working outdoors andwas an avid sailor, circumnavigatingthe Atlantic in a 40-foot boat withhis children. He is survived by his wifeof 46 years, a son, a daughter, sixgrandchildren, a sister and brother, andnumerous nieces and nephews.Grant Myers died on June 12, 2009. Hewas born in Seattle, WA on January26, 1918. He drove ambulances for<strong>AFS</strong> during World War II in NorthAfrica. After the war, he was vicepresident of operations for Evergreenand Trailways Bus Companies. He alsoworked as the area claims adjusterand accident investigator for theSeattle and Tacoma Locals of theLongshoreman and Warehouseman’sUnion. He was a lifelong supporterof the Boy Scouts of America. Heis survived by his ex-wife MargaretDoreen Myers, four step-daughtersand a son.<strong>AFS</strong> JANUS • SPRING 2011 • 11
