The inputoutputformulas corresponding to the IP address and portencoding range in size from 14 to 74 elements. The inputoutputformulas indicate that all the commas included inthe PORT command are concrete values with no dependenciesto the output of the getsockname system call. Theinput-output formulas also indicate that the port is derivedfrom bytes 4 and 5 of the getsockname parameters, andthe IP address is derived from bytes 6 through 9 of theparameters. The first four bytes of the getsockname parametersare the socket descriptor and the address family, which are not used to derive the encoded port and IP address.Replaying the FTP session: When the rewriter wants toreplay the client side of the dialog, it might want to rewritethe address or port number that the server will connect to,maybe even redirecting it to a different host. In this case, the IP address and port get encoded as a variable-lengthstring. Thus, our input-output formulas are not enough tobuild the transformation function, and we need to includesome additional information about the encoding. We obtainsuch information from static analysis. In particular, from the dynamic information, we derivethat we only need to perform static slicing of the binaryon the sections between the getsockname and the sendcalls, which significantly reduces the amount of code toanalyze. In this case the static slice shows that the encodinggets done by one call to the vsprintf function in themsvcrt.dll library (the name of the function is obtainedusing IDA Pro) with the following format string “PORT%d,%d,%d,%d,%d,%d” where the first four parametersare the four bytes of the IP address and the last two are theport bytes. All these six bytes are derived from the outputof the getsockname sytem call. This information is thenencoded in the transformation function, so that when itwants to rewrite the IP address or the port, the rewriter justSteps in the formula generation phaseIR generationSSA generationMemory conversionsSlicing (46 slices)Formula Generation (46 slices)Formula Simplification (46 slices)Run time3min 58sec12min 53sec43.5sec23sec14sec28secTable 3: Run time for the different steps in the formulageneration phase using the FileZilla execution trace. Thus, by combining previouslyproposed techniques to identify field boundaries, and thetechniques presented in this paper to automatically generatethe transformation function we have shown that weenable automatic NAT rewriting.Run time: Here we provide some performance numbersto give the reader an idea about the scalability of our approach.Table 3 shows the running time for the FileZillaexecution trace durig the formula generation phase. Weonly show the run time for the Filezilla execution trace, because it is the largest of our execution traces beingaround 3GB. The results show that we can run the completeformula generation phase in under 20 minutes withthe SSA translation taking about 66% of the whole executiontime. The reason SSA is slower than the other steps isthat our implementation is general and has not been optimizedfor execution traces. Notice that, the last three stepsshow the total time for the 46 slices that were computed. The total time for the complete analysis stage, whichincludes the execution monitoring and the function generationphases in addition to the formula generation phase,is under 30 minutes. Note that, this is the time to generatethe transformation function. The online editing stagetakes negligible time to apply the transformation functionwith the new values for the dynamic fields.12
