A periodic function is a function thatrepeats its values in regular intervalsor periods.Frequency is the number ofoccurrences of a repeating eventper unit time.
The fundamental tone, abbreviated f0 or F0, isthe lowest frequency in a harmonic series.The fundamental frequency of a periodic signal isthe inverse of the period length.The period is, in turn, the smallest repeating unitof a signal. One period thus describes theperiodic signal completely.The significance of defining the period as thesmallest repeating unit can be appreciated bynoting that two or more concatenated periodsform a repeating pattern in the signal. However,the concatenated signal unit obviously containsredundant information.The fundamental frequency is the lowestfrequency component of a signal that excites(imparts energy) to a system.In terms of a superposition of sinusoids (forexample, fourier series), the fundamentalfrequency is the lowest frequency sinusoidal inthe sum.
