9.I had several Darrow escapes from capture and. was firedon in doing so, at least twice. One pretty dark night I wascycling from Tulsk to Drinan and on approaching a bend in theread I suddenly got the smell of cigarette smoke. I dismountedand turned my cycle around. Immediately I was called upon tohalt. I got round the bend of the road and threw my cycleaway from me and got into a drain. I worked my way along thisdrain and got around where the enemy were on the party road,coming in mere or less on their rear. I had an old Bulldogrevolver on me and I opened fire on them. The Tans took coverand fired back on me, but never made any attempt to close withme. I had no trouble in making a getaway from the place.They did not even get my bicycle.On another occasion earlier in the trouble they raidedmy house for me. I was in bed at the time and had no chanceto get away. Sergeant Cawley came into the room. I let onthat I was ill with pneumonia. My father got on to themsaying that he or his family had nothing whatever to do withwhat was happening and pointed out that his other son (mybrother) had served in the British army. This seemed to haveupset them and gave them the impression that they had made amistake and they all withdrew leaving me in the bed. Nosooner had they left than I jumped from bed and quickly pulledon some clothes and made my way-from the house by the back.They returned in a few minutes and, on findingme missing,they beat up my father and threatened to shoot him. Our housewas raided practically every week after that an& my father wassubject to abuse by heating and putting revolvers to his headand telling him he was die and so forth.
