Energy consumption and supply at StanstedSTAL uses nearly 100 million kWhr of energy every year. This energy is used for a diverse range of functions acrossthe airport site including:• Heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) of buildings• Internal and external lighting including flood lighting• Power supply to passenger related equipment such asbaggage conveyers, escalators, lifts, check in desks andinformation screens• The track transit system (TTS) which transfers passengersbetween the terminal and satellites 1 and 2• Approach, runway and taxiway lighting• Air traffic control related equipment• Fixed ground power units to allow aircraft to plug intomains electricity rather than running their engines whileon stand• Engineering plant and equipment to support other utilitiessuch as water supply pumps and fire hydrants• IT equipment: computers, printers.Figure 2 shows the total electricity, gas and woodchip suppliedto the airport in 2007, 2008 and 2009.Figure 2: Energy Consumption at Stansted Airport100,00090,00080,00070,00060,00050,00040,00030,000Energy consumption (MWh/year)92,16293,36190,832ElectricityGasBiomassOur energy consumption has increased over the last 20 yearssince our main terminal was commissioned in 1991 and aspassenger numbers have increased. In 2010, we commissioned a study into our energyconsumption. This provided a breakdown of energy demand inkey areas and buildings. We analysed energy consumption in2007, 2008 and 2009, with 2008 being chosen as our agreedbaseline year, in line with the qualification year for the CarbonReduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme. Our challenge is to increase the efficiency of our operations sowe can reduce energy consumption and associated emissions, whilst delivering our plans for growth of the airport.20,00016,855 16,82815,27310,0002,6887,9980200720082009Stansted Airport | Energy Strategy 2011–2016 | September 2011 13
