<strong>Bangladesh</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Journal 61Role of NGOs, private sector, workers’ organisations <strong>and</strong> civil societyNGOs <strong>and</strong> Community organizations can promote awareness on issues of child labour <strong>and</strong>education with<strong>in</strong> their communities. They can also build community monitor<strong>in</strong>g systems toverify the <strong>in</strong>cidence of child labour, dropout <strong>and</strong> never-enrolled children <strong>in</strong> their areas. Theycan also help directly with elim<strong>in</strong>ation of child labour by provid<strong>in</strong>g or support<strong>in</strong>g adultliteracy schemes, adult skills tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, micro-credit programs <strong>and</strong> transitional educationalprogrammes.Private sector, employer groups <strong>and</strong> trade unions can play their role by strength<strong>in</strong>g theircooperation to help <strong>in</strong> the direct elim<strong>in</strong>ation of child labour through strict enforcement <strong>and</strong>monitor<strong>in</strong>g of labour regulations, campaign <strong>and</strong> advocacy work <strong>and</strong> sector-based projects.They also have a role <strong>in</strong> strengthen<strong>in</strong>g public-private partnerships between governmentagencies <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> non-government providers <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stututions. The aimwould be to identify needs of the labour market; help tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutions develop modularcompetence-based courses <strong>and</strong> their accreditation, <strong>and</strong> develop job placementmechanisms. They also can help <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g safety nets, codes of conduct <strong>and</strong>procurement policies which will protect children from be<strong>in</strong>g engaged <strong>in</strong> hazardous activitiesMedia <strong>and</strong> civil society also need to help <strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g awareness <strong>and</strong> mobiliz<strong>in</strong>g citizens toform public op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> create a national movement aga<strong>in</strong>st child labour.
