ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERPLANT DESIGNCHLORINATIONAdding chlorine is an efficient method fordisinfection of water. Whether free chlorine, chloramine or chlorine dioxide is added, itcan be removed in an activated carbonfilter, before the water is used for processor drinking water purposes.ACTIVATED CARBONActivated carbon is a natural product madeof organic coal, wood or coconut shells. Awide pore structure is developed after anactivation process with steam or a chemicalprocess, whereby the activated carbon getsan extensive surface area. This area cangrow into a size of 2000 square meters ormore per gram of activated carbon.DECHLORINATIONRemoval of chlorine is carried out througha catalytic reaction where the compoundsof chlorine are transformed into chlorineions and carbonic acid. The activatedcarbon has a very large capacity whenremoving chlorine, because it only takespart in the process as a catalyst.DECHLORINATION HALF BEDVALUEThe ability of activated carbon to removechlorine is expressed in the dechlorinationhalf bed value. The carbon type appliedhas a dechlorination half bed value of 2-5cm. That is, when water to be treated haspassed through a carbon layer of 2-5 cm inthe filter, the chlorine content is reduced byone-half. This value applies to treatment ofneutral utility water.CAPACITYThe capacity of activated carbon isextremely large because of the extensivesurface within the internal structure of thepores. However, all water supplies containorganic matters using the capacity of thecarbon through direct adsorption or foulingof the carbon. The life of the carbon fillingis thus normally one year.BACKWASHINGThe carbon filters series ACM/ACH areprepared for automatic backwash whichhelps to keep the carbon as cleanas possible. It is important to backwashthe carbon with chlorinated water oralternatively with disinfected water, toavoid bacterial growth in the filter.PREFILTRATIONAs mentioned earlier, it is importantthat the carbon is not fouled, as thisreduces the capacity of the carbon. TheEUROWATER product program includes awide range of prefilters, pressure filterswith filter bag and sand filters, which meetyour needs for prefiltration.VALVE SYSTEMThe carbon filters are provided withautomatic valves. Series ACM has aEUROWATER valve controlling all thefunctions during rinse. Series ACH hasindividual diaphragm valves provided withpilot control.CORROSION RESISTANTFILTER TANKThe filter tanks are made of steel and arecoated with a polyethylene alloy whichmakes them absolute pore dense. Herebythe strength of the steel and the corrosionresistance of plastics are combined. Thepipe systems are made of PVC.ELECTRONIC PROGRAMMERThe carbon filters series ACM/ACH areprovided with an electronic programmer, type ETP 4B, which at predeterminedhours controls the plant through the rinsecycles. Both backwash and quality rinsecan be individually programmed.SPECIAL APPLICATIONSCarbon filtration has various applicationswithin many industries making specialrequirements to materials, componentsand operation of the filters. Consequently,EUROWATER can supply activated carbonfilters according to special requirementse.g. vessels and pipe systems in stainlesssteel, activated carbon filters suitable forCIP and different types of activated carbon. However, since these are not included inthe EUROWATER standard program, inquiries are considered individually.SPECIFICATIONSPLANT FLOW RATE PRESSURE CARBON FLOOR SPACE HEIGHT INLET AND DRAINLOSS FILLINGOUTLETTYPE m 3 /h bar litres mm x mm mm DN/mm DN/mmACM 20 0.1-0.3 0.1-0.3 20 300 x 300 1165 20/25 10/16ACM 40 0.2-0.5 0.2-0.5 35 300 x 300 1465 20/25 10/16ACM 60 0.3-1.0 0.2-0.5 52 350 x 350 1465 20/25 10/16ACM 360 0.6-1.4 0.3-0.6 104 400 x 400 1925 20/25 10/16ACM 600 0.9-2.2 0.4-0.8 156 500 x 500 1925 20/25 10/16ACH 1200 1.5-4.8 0.4-0.8 260 900 x 700 1925 40/50 25/32ACH 1800 2.8-7.4 0.4-0.8 468 1050 x 850 1925 40/50 25/32ACH 2000 2.8-7.4 0.5-0.9 676 1050 x 850 2425 40/50 25/32The flow rate of the individual plants depends on the chlorine content and the composition of the water.
