2011 Season previewThe theme for the 2011 Bellarmine University lacrosseteam will be one of strength and perseverance. Afterthe death of Coach Jack McGetrick, the only coach inthe young program’s history, Bart Sullivan takes overas interim Head Coach and looks to replace a talentedgroup of seniors from last year’s team including ChaseWilliams, Derek Hopcroft, and Jarrett Davis, who were alldrafted into the National Lacrosse League.Bellarmine is coming off one of their best seasons, finishing2010 with a 9-6 record. The mark is the best sincemoving to a full Division I schedule. The season endedwith on an uptick as the Knights upended Ohio State inin dramatic fashion, besting the Buckeyes 14-13 in overtimeat Ohio State. The team also saw success individually as Chase Williamswas named Inside Lacrosse’s National Player of theWeek after getting four goals and three assists againstRobert Morris. To fill the void left by the departing seniors, Sullivancould turn to junior Austin Bright, who is the team’sleading scorer after getting 12 goals and five assists lastseason, to make up the lost production. Junior LukeActon also returns to his attack position after playing inall 15 games last season. The midfield is full of players who look to expand theirroles from last season. Juniors Trevor Timmerberg andColton Clark will see plenty of action this season. While the offense will see plenty of new faces, the defensereturns some of their stalwarts. Ross Doan, DrewSoeder, and Austin Powell all return after starting everygame last season. The strength of Bellarmine’s team could well be betweenthe pipes as the Knights return two solid goaliesin senior Scott Bowles and sophomore Dillon Ward. Lastyear, the players split time and were very effective.Bellarmine will get challenged early and often during the2011 season. After opening the season with two gamesat Owsley B. Frazier Stadium against Detroit on February12 and Mercer on February 19, the Knights will goon a five game road trip as they take on Delaware, No.14 Lloyola; which opens up ECAC play; No. 6 Maryland,Harvard, and Hartford. The rest of the home games consist of Virginia MilitaryInstitute on March 16, Air Force Academy on April 9,University of Denver on April 23, and the season finaleagainst Ohio State on April 30.knights 20116
