Throwingopportunity mean the position of theuke's feet at the instant the attack islaunched. Many players are notskillful enough to launch a successfulattack for more than one condition ofopportunity. The astute reader willnotice that a new variable called"opportunity"is in fact part of theoverall attack situation.Unfortunately, it cannot be totallyignored like movement can since ukeis going to be in some given positionwhen the attack is launched.Therefore, it is just a question ofwhether that position is the one theattacker is skillful at launchingattacks against.The correct opportunity can occurfrom either induced action bv tori ora voluntary action by uke. For beginnersand relatively inexperienced judoka, totori usually waits for a voluntary move byuke before attacking hoping uke will stepinto a desired position of opportunity.When a coach introduces a throwingtechnique to his/her students, thedemonstration should include the throwbeing done with motion as well as thestatic stance demonstration. Recognizingthat all motion-direction lines cannot becovered in one class session the coachshould make verbal note of the otherthrowing opportunities and demonstrateother motion-direction lines at future classgatherings for the same throw. In anycase, it is imperative that the students besubjected to the concept of motion whenany throw is taught. If this is not done,problems await the student in the future.Although perhaps not very obvious tomany practitioners, there exists a limitednumber of throws whereby attacks mustbe made while in motion if success is to beachieved. These techniques are what weknow as foot/leg sweeps. I refer to theharai or barai type of action.In this type of technique, the leg beingattacked has no weight on it at all. It canbe advancing, retreating, moving sidewaysor even in some form of circularmovement. Clearly then, the attac} ,leg has as a minimum some finite Vmotion, but is not totally motionless.When a leg sweep is properly executed,contact with the leg to be swept willusually be made when that leg is inmotion. Contact could be madeanywhere from the onset of thetrajectory the leg will follow to a pointjust before contact with the mat ismade.
