(Continued from page 41)In early August, some $20,000 worth ofautomated equipment went into full-scaleproduction of the cartridge at Albany.Dow Chemical Company, whose recentadvances in plastics research and develop·ment made the polyethylene cartridgepossible, staged the first unveiling of theimportant new product in mid-June at Midland.Officers from the city police department, the Midland County sheriff's depart.ment, and Dow's own plant protection staffwere invited, with press representatives, totry the special ammunition. There is no conceivable way in which thewax-loaded ammo could be confused withlive rounds. The cartridge is fire-engine red,and the rim carries the words "Colt .38Wax," or "Colt .45 Wax." And the traininground is far lighter in weight than the wadcutteror round-nosed version. As far as calibers are concerned, Saxesays it could produce the ammunition inany center-fire size, should the demandnecessitate it. Indications are a .32 caliberwax-loaded cartridge may be made next.Temperature range of the wax pelletwhichhas a slight tacky feeling to the touch-is from 65 degrees below zero to 165degrees above. That should take care ofmost situations in which the new ammo willsee use. The plastic case itself tends to bea bit on the slippery side. This is not froma presence of wax on the case-which thereisn't-but from the inherent nature of thepolyethylene.Handgunners will find the plastic casesgood for at least three or four reloads. Afterthat, the shoulder of the rim may fail. Butcases have been reloaded as many as sixtimes successfully.Neither the .38 nor the ,45 version pro·duces any appreciable recoil. But the larger.45 primer puts more punch behind the waxbullet, which is somewhat heavier than its.38 Special counterpart, and these two factorsseem to result in improved accuracy, plus alittle better feel in the hands of an experi.enced shooter. Primers used in the samplesare standard for the respective calibers, butwith the above in mind, a larger primer, andpossibly a heavier wax pellet, are being consideredfor the .38.Recommended shooting distance for thewax·loaded ammo is 15 to 20 feet, and youcan get reasonable accuracy at that range.By reasonable . . . a policeman who hadwhirled, drawn and fired six shots doubleaction could tell without a doubt if he hadfelled his man. But don't expect tight groups, all in the black. It migbt be possible, butthat's not what the ammunition is intended for.A few misfires were experienced dllringtrial shooting at Midland, and one caseruptured-the first such mishap experiencedin test use of the new product. But thesepre-production samples had primers insertedby hand, as well as hand-pressed wax bullets.Fully automatic production will eliminatenearly every chance of similar malfunctions.Use of the wax-loaded ammunition appearsto have little or no affect on the bore of yourhandgun. If anything, occasional firing ofthe training cartridges may help to keepthe weapon clean. As an important aid in firearms safety, this plastic ammo will readily be welcomedthroughout the nation. And as one Easternlaw enforcement chief said, it is one of ~the greatest police training devices yet. ~.._------------------------------------**TOP GUN BARGAINS**MODEL 1871 VETTERLICAVALRY CARBINE~~~...Issued to Police and crack Bersag-lierioutfits.
