Figure 4.6(A) shows mean recognition thresholds plotted as a function of theletter separation. The mean threshold values showed similar threshold patternsfor both the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes and scaled with the isolatedletter thresholds at each of the separation condition. The error bars were widerfor the data points of amblyopic eyes. Repeated measures within subjects oneway ANOVA for the non-amblyopic eyes showed a significant effect of letterseparation on high contrast recognition thresholds F (2.22, 8.88) = 102.79, p 0.05) except forabutting condition (0.19±0.14) where there was a marginal significantdifference (p=0.058). The non statistical significant findings between theisolated letter thresholds and rest of the separations can be explained by thelarge error bars at each of the separation condition including the 1.0 letterwidth separation, implying a wider variation in the recognition thresholds of theamblyopic eyes. Pair wise comparison showed a significant difference inthresholds for 0.2 letter separation (0.04±0.12) and abutting condition(0.19±0.14) compared with rest of the separation conditions in amblyopiceyes.167
The recognition threshold values of all the separations were normalised againstthe isolated letter condition (threshold value at each separation condition –isolated letter threshold value) and are shown in Table 4.5. Figure 4.6(B) showsthe mean normalised threshold values as a function of letter separation. Themean normalised thresholds increased with decreasing inter-letter separation.The error bars were wider for the amblyopic eyes than the non-amblyopic eyes.The data points for the normalised threshold values for the amblyopic and thenon-amblyopic eyes nearly overlaps each other at all the separationsmeasured. This implies that contour interaction effect scales in the nonamblyopicand the amblyopic eyes when measured at the normalisedrecognition thresholds.168
