SPECIAL MEMORIAL TO SEPT. 11"Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest"-Seven Alumni Whose Lives Resonated Beauty and HopeA Caring SpiritOn Sept. 11, 2001, Americawas attacked in a way thatit has never experiencedand the world has never witnessed.Like Dec. 7, 1941, 60 years before,Sept. 11 will be remembered byAmericans and the world as a "Dayof Infamy," a day in which timestood still and the world changedforever. Immediately, friends andfamily from around the nationreached out to each other, seekinglove and the soothing sound of afamiliar voice. For many of us ourloved ones were safe, seeminglydistant from the horrible attacks inNew York City, Washington,D.C., and Pennsylvania. Unfortunately,for as many who were leftuntouched, many others weredirectly affected, lives shattered,turned upside down by senselessacts of evil which remain unexplainable.For the tightknit communityof William and Mary,bound together in a quilt of generationsand love of alma mater, theattack of Sept. 11 has left our communitymourning the loss of lovedones, sons and daughters, fathersand mothers, husbands and wives.The seven William and Maryalumni known to have been killedin the World Trade Center areremembered and will not be forgotten,now or forever. Whilethese memorials cannot evenbegin to capture the significance ofthese seven people to their friendsand family, it is hoped that theirstories will keep the memories oftheir lives burning bright in ourminds and embedded deep withinour souls.- Jeb Stuart RosebrookAlysia Christine Burton BasmajianB.B.A. '00, 23, her husband AnthonyBasmajian '00, and their 2-yearold-daughter Kaela Grace hadbeen settled in Bayonne, N.J., forjust over a year since graduatingfrom William and Mary in thespring of 2000. Both Alysia andAlysia Christine Burton BasmajianB.B.A. '00, with her husband,Anthony '00, and daughter, Kaela.Anthony worked in New YorkCity, Anthony as a trader on WallStreet for First Union, Alysia as anaccountant for Cantor Fitzgeraldon the 104th floor of One WorldTrade Center.Born in Longview, "'Tash.,Alysia had spent most of her life inRichmond, Va ., before matriculatingfrom Godwin High School tothe College of William and Maryin 1996. Alysia, an accountingmajor, was an active member ofDelta Delta Delta Sorority, whichoffered her a great deal of supportwhile in college. Alysia's first lovewas art and some day she wantedto open up her own studio in Manhattan.According to her husbandAnthony, "when she smiled, everyonesmiled." Those who loved herwill always remember Alysia as "abeautiful, devoted, compassionatemother and wife, whose caringspirit and warm smile made everyonearound her happy."In addition to her husband anddaughter, Alys ia is survived by herparents Milton and Barbara Burton;brothers Kevin and Jeff and theirwives Dorothy and Brandon. She isalso survived by her in-laws, Andreand Angela Basmajian, and threebrothers-in-law, Aaron, Alden andAlan Basmajian. A celebration ofAlysia's life was held at Richmond'sTrinity United Methodist Churchon Oct. 1, 2001. H e had begun teachinghi s oldest daughter Hope to sa il ,even before she could wa lk . In 1988he raced a 40-foot sailboat from theAzores to the Caribbean. Later,C hris met hi s wife Katherine whenthey both worked as sailing instruc-tors of teenagers for Sail Caribbean.In addition to sailing, Chrisscuba dived in the Caribbean andthe Great Barrier Reef and cycledtraveled throughout the UnitedStates, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.Before earning his M .B.A.from William and Mary in 1998,Chris, graduated with his bachelors'degree from Yale in 1988,where he was captain of the YaleSai ling Team. In 1992 , Chrisearned a law degree with honorsfrom Emory University and practicedlaw in New Haven, Conn.,and Richmond, Va ., before comingto Wi lliam and Mary for his master'sin business administration.Chris is also survived by hisparents, William R. and VirginiaSelfors Murphy of Woodbridge,Conn.; and his brother, DavidM . . Murphy, of Bedford, N.Y.A memorial service was held at St.Mary's Church in New Haven.The family's memorial arrangementswill be priva te.A WonderfulHuman BeingJames Brian Reilly B.A. '98, 25, ofManhattan's East Village, devotedson of William and Virginia Reillyof Huntington Park, N.Y., andyoungest brother of five, was abond trader at Keefe, Bruyette,& Woods on the 89th floor ofTwo World Trade Center. He lastspoke to his roommates and hisfather, assuring them all that hewas okay. Moments later thesecond plane hit the south tower.A native New Yorker, Jimgraduated from Walt WhitmanHigh in Huntington Park where heexce lled at soccer and academics.He followed his older brotherThomas E. Reilly '92 to Williamand Mary where he earned adegree in public policy. Jim wasalso a member of Theta Delta Chifraternity. According to his motherVirginia, "Jim loved his four yearsat William and Mary. He was aJames Brian Reilly B.A . '98wonderful, outgoing boy; he wastotally considerate of others, awonderful son, brother and uncle, awonderful human being."Jim's life was remembered at amemorial mass at St. Hugh of LincolnRoman Catholic Church inHuntington Station. Over 850people attended the mass that wascelebrated by the same Jesuit priestwho had marri ed Jim's parents.
