Byrdnamed many streams, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gMatrimony Creek where, like hiswife, the water was “exceed<strong>in</strong>glynoisy and tempestuous.”On our hike back to ourcars, we admired the beautifulsurround<strong>in</strong>gs, discuss<strong>in</strong>gholly berries, pipsissewa, andrattlesnake orchids. We also sawthe freshly chopped stumps andtrees of some resident beavers.We safely returned to a tray fullPhoto by Lucas Conkleof brownies after a beautiful day of fellowship and nature.–Samanthe Tivera fussy K<strong>in</strong>gfisher, congenial conversation, and that sense ofaccomplishment that comes with complet<strong>in</strong>g a worthwhiletask together.As always with litter clean-up, some strange itemswere found: an unbroken automobile headlight, loads ofplastic bottles, and one life-size Curious George, gratefulfor his rescue from the <strong>river</strong>.All <strong>in</strong> all, twenty-one bags of garbage collected, alittle more practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>river</strong> negotiation for this novice, andthe realization that whatever the threat to this <strong>river</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>,whether garbage or greater, teamwork is the key, and thisgroup can accomplish it!–Susan LassiterRiver Clean-up: Observations of aNon-MemberDespite forecasts of blustery weather, eight good citizensmet on October 1 st for DRBA’s annual participation <strong>in</strong> NCBig Sweep. The Smith River <strong>in</strong> Eden was chosen for littercollection <strong>in</strong> what turned out to be a most pleasant andproductive effort. T and L<strong>in</strong>dley Butler led the group, withcareful <strong>in</strong>struction on safety, plus <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formationabout the history, natural and human, along that stretch ofthe <strong>river</strong>.So, how does one accomplish <strong>river</strong> clean-up of litter,mostly along the banks, from a mov<strong>in</strong>g canoe or kayak?Teamwork. Whether fish<strong>in</strong>g out trash, hold<strong>in</strong>g the bag, orsteady<strong>in</strong>g a canoe for another to step out and collect plasticbottles, this is not a task accomplished solo.Rewards? A very pleasant paddle along a beautifulstretch of <strong>river</strong>, fly-overs of a graceful Great Blue Heron andAbove: Hikers enjoy<strong>in</strong>g the fall and w<strong>in</strong>ter lanscapes alongthe <strong>Dan</strong> River.
