Low MigrationUV Printing Ink Systemsfor Printing of FoodPackagingThe production of legally compliant food packagingrequires the correct printing ink and lacquer systemsto be selected. Based on our latest developments,Zeller+Gmelin presents a new generation of lowmigration UV printing inks for the printing of foodpackaging and labels. These products are distinguishedby their low migration composition coupled with excellentprinting characteristics. All our low migration ink series are formulated inaccordance with the guidelines of the Nestlé GuidanceNote as well as with the Swiss regulation SR817.023.21.UV Flexo PrintingUVAFLEX ® Y71 Series3rd generation low migration UV flexo inks for printingon paper and synthetic substrates for labels, unsupportedfilms, folding cartons and flexible packaging. The series is characterized by its very low odour andimproved wet-rub resistance on synthetic substrates.Analytical-CentreAt Zeller+Gmelin we have at our disposal our own analyticalfacilities, which we established specifically forthe development of low migration printing inks, rawmaterial quality control and for the internal assessmentof test samples. We can assess the migration from ourprinting inks by gas-chromatography (GC-MS) and liquid-chromatography(LC-MS) with mass-spectrography.Naturally we also send each of our low migration inkseries to independent analytical institutes for analysisand evaluation. With this double verification we can offer the maximumpossible product security to printers, brand ownersand consumers. Analytical results have consistentlyproven that if our low migration ink series are professionallyhandled, then it is possible to meet or evenclearly undercut the legal 10 ppb migration limit inmigration tests with 95% ethanol.Migration TypesMigration byPenetrationMigration by Contact(Set-Off)Migration byEvaporationMigration byDistillationMigration from the printedside of the substrateto the unprinted side.Migration from the printedto the unprinted sideof the substrate in a stackor reel (set-off).Migration by evaporatingvolatile substancesthrough heating (e.g.cooking, baking).Migration by steam-distillationthrough cooking, baking or sterilization.4
