2010 Archives - School of Dental Medicine - Tufts University●●Graduation dinnerHere & thereCommencement 2010: They're on Their WayAt a ceremony on Carmichael Quad on Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus on May 23, 190 studentsreceived their D.M.D.s, including 23 graduates of the International Student Program and seven in theFaculty Track International Student Program. Also recognized were three M.S. degree recipients and 55students who were awarded postgraduate certificates of achievement in dental specialties andfellowships. At least 120 dental school faculty members participated in the ceremony and Dean LonnieH. Norris, DG80, expressed sincere gratitude to them for their excellent attendance in celebration of theClass of D2010's achievements.Dean Norris, thanked the class for their patience and constructive input during the school's verticalexpansion, the 18-month construction project that added five floors to the dental building at OneKneeland Street. "We are fortunate to have had you as students," Norris said. "Your input [as alumni]will help us continue to be a leading dental school in our beautiful new space."Class president Meghann Dombroski thought back to the first time the group came together in MerrittAuditorium four years ago, recalling the nervous anticipation in the air that day. After 27 dissectiongroups, 84 exams, two board exams, two Boston sports championships, 24 marriages, 19 babies and onewater main break, she said, "I feel that same nervous apprehension. I still have butterflies. But I lovebeginnings, and this is the start of our future. When you have tough days, remember what you're feelingtoday."At the all-university Commencement earlier in the day, Sol Gittleman, a professor beloved bythousands of Tufts graduates, told the class that in order to understand and be ready for the future, theymust know about the past. "Each generation," he said, "has to grow from the previous one, learn from itserrors and build."Gittleman, the Alice and Nathan Gantcher University Professor and the university's provost from 1981to 2002, was the main speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. In addition to Gittleman, TuftsPresident Lawrence S. Bacow presented honorary degrees to Richard Dorsay, A60, M64, a foundingmember of the Leonard Carmichael Society, a student group that coodinates volunteer activities ofundergraduates; Kristina M. Johnson, the Under Secretary of Energy in the U.S. Department ofEnergy; Ann Hobson Pilot, former principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and Gordon S.Wood, A55, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who was on the faculty at Brown University for nearly40 years.At the dental school ceremony, the Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service went toNoshir Mehta, DG73, DI77, professor and chair of general dentistry and a member of Tufts facultysince 1976. Peter Arsenault, D94, an assistant clinical professor of prosthodontics, and Marcelo

Paul Leavis, an associate professor of physiology, received the Dean's Award forExcellence in Basic Science Teaching. Anthony Silvestri, E69, a clinical professor of prosthodontics,and Charles H. Rankin, D79, DG86, a professor of endodontics, received the Dean's Award forExcellence in Pre-clinical Teaching.Rankin, who has won the teaching award 11 consecutive years, reminded the class to maintain balancein their lives, to keep their parents proud of them and to cherish the freedoms granted by the UnitedStates.For more on Commencement, go to http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/2010/05_2/features/03.-Jacqueline MitchellUndergrads Explore Dental CareersThe Dental Admissions Office hosted its seventh annual Tufts Undergraduate Open House, "Exploring aCareer in Dentistry," in April. Twenty-four students from the Medford/Somerville campus, ranging fromfreshmen to post-baccalaureate students, attended the event. Carol Baffi-Dugan, associate dean ofundergraduate education, and Shirley Smith, associate director of pre-professional advising, both basedon the Medford/Somerville campus, also attended.Prospective students were welcomed by Mark Gonthier, associate dean of admissions and studentaffairs, and James Hanley, associate dean for clinical affairs. Nancy Arbree, associate dean foracademic affairs, spoke to the students about the dental curriculum as well as the many advantages of acareer in dentistry. Students heard from Maureen Lombard, director of clinical services, about clinicaltraining at Tufts Dental School and faculty member Catherine Hayes about public health andcommunity service opportunities available to dental students. Students then had a chance to use thebrand-new simulation clinic under the guidance of faculty member Dorothy Vannah.Prospective students toured the dental school, including the five-floor addition, guided by current Tuftsdental students. The prospective students ended their day at a reception in the 15th-floor student lounge,where they met with leaders of many of the student organizations.OKU ConvocationTwenty-two students were inducted into the national dental honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon at aceremony on May 21 at the Radisson Hotel Boston. This year's guest speaker was Naomi Rosenberg,dean of the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts. There was near-record attendance,including 126 OKU alumni, inductees and family members.The D10/IS10 student inductees are: Akash Aghera, Paul Ala, Fiona Andrea, Andras Balint,
