<strong>2010</strong> <strong>Archives</strong> - <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dental</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> - <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong>Suzuki, an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> prosthodontics, shared this year's Dean's Award for Excellence inClinical Teaching. Paul Leavis, an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> physiology, received the Dean's Award forExcellence in Basic Science Teaching. Anthony Silvestri, E69, a clinical pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> prosthodontics,and Charles H. Rankin, D79, DG86, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> endodontics, received the Dean's Award forExcellence in Pre-clinical Teaching.Rankin, who has won the teaching award 11 consecutive years, reminded the class to maintain balancein their lives, to keep their parents proud <strong>of</strong> them and to cherish the freedoms granted by the UnitedStates.For more on Commencement, go to http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/<strong>2010</strong>/05_2/features/03.-Jacqueline MitchellUndergrads Explore <strong>Dental</strong> CareersThe <strong>Dental</strong> Admissions Office hosted its seventh annual <strong>Tufts</strong> Undergraduate Open House, "Exploring aCareer in Dentistry," in April. Twenty-four students from the Medford/Somerville campus, ranging fromfreshmen to post-baccalaureate students, attended the event. Carol Baffi-Dugan, associate dean <strong>of</strong>undergraduate education, and Shirley Smith, associate director <strong>of</strong> pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional advising, both basedon the Medford/Somerville campus, also attended.Prospective students were welcomed by Mark Gonthier, associate dean <strong>of</strong> admissions and studentaffairs, and James Hanley, associate dean for clinical affairs. Nancy Arbree, associate dean foracademic affairs, spoke to the students about the dental curriculum as well as the many advantages <strong>of</strong> acareer in dentistry. Students heard from Maureen Lombard, director <strong>of</strong> clinical services, about clinicaltraining at <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>Dental</strong> <strong>School</strong> and faculty member Catherine Hayes about public health andcommunity service opportunities available to dental students. Students then had a chance to use thebrand-new simulation clinic under the guidance <strong>of</strong> faculty member Dorothy Vannah.Prospective students toured the dental school, including the five-floor addition, guided by current <strong>Tufts</strong>dental students. The prospective students ended their day at a reception in the 15th-floor student lounge,where they met with leaders <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the student organizations.OKU ConvocationTwenty-two students were inducted into the national dental honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon at aceremony on May 21 at the Radisson Hotel Boston. This year's guest speaker was Naomi Rosenberg,dean <strong>of</strong> the Sackler <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Graduate Biomedical Sciences at <strong>Tufts</strong>. There was near-record attendance,including 126 OKU alumni, inductees and family members.The D10/IS10 student inductees are: Akash Aghera, Paul Ala, Fiona Andrea, Andras Balint,
