INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPSMOF CHRISTIANS AND JEWSThe Mountains andWaters of IsraelAnother Miraculous CrossingJoshua 3:1-17The Jordan River is perhaps the most importantbody of water in Israel, both in biblical timesand today. Much of everyday life in the HolyLand relies on the steady flow of the Jordanfrom its source at Mount Hermon in northernIsrael down the eastern edge of Israel to theDead Sea—the lowest spot on earth at nearly1,300 feet below sea level. The most prominentevent involving the Jordan during this timeperiod was its crossing by Joshua and the peopleof Israel as they entered the Promised Land afterforty years of wandering in the desert. TheJordan was at flood stage when the Israelitesreached it, making a crossing all but impossible. However, Joshua told the people to follow thepriests, who were carrying the Ark of theCovenant. As soon as the priests stepped intothe water the Jordan stopped flowing, whichallowed the entire nation to cross over on dryground as happened earlier at the Red Sea—asecond miraculous parting of the waters. Joshua4 records that Joshua sent representatives fromeach tribe back into the river to retrieve stonesand construct a memorial at Gilgal. He alsoinstructed Israel to tell anyone who asked aboutthe stones the story of God’s miraculous powerin leading His people into the Promised Land.1. Why did God lead Israel to the edge of theJordan when it was at flood stage?_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________2. Why was it important for the people tofollow the priests carrying the Ark?_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________3. Do you think it is important for us to havememorials in our lives as reminders of God’spower and answers to our prayers?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Something to Think About:It is always good to be reminded of God’s faithfulness in our lives. Remembering what He hasdone can also help keep us from forging ahead on our own and forgetting to wait on the Lord.We must learn to discern and follow God’s leading.7
