Page2DocumentLAURIN- Deliverable 3.4Version1.21. Executive SummaryMain questions of the analysisThese following questions framed the task 3.4 "Analysis of indexing systems":• Which indexing and classification systems and methods are used by the LAURINpartners? Does their daily indexing work base on library standards?• Which existing text-type indexes and subject indexes should be integrated into theLAURIN system?• Are there existing thesauri systems or tools which can be re-used in the project? Howdo these systems handle multilingual thesauri?• Are there feasible network solutions for a "distributed thesaurus"? How do otherthesauri solve this problem?Work done• The indexing systems of the participating libraries and archives were using aquestionnaire. The answers given by the librarians can be found in Annex 3. Someadditional inquiries by e-mail and contacts to other libraries (e.g. Literaturhaus Wien,Steiermärkische Landesbibliothek) completed these investigations.• A sample of ten thesaurus software tools were tested. Software not available as trialversion was evaluated with the help of information given on the Internet or by contactingthe software vendors (brochures). A complete list of the tested or examined thesaurustools is listed in Annex 2.• Thesauri available on the WWW have been evaluated especially in regard of their userinterface (display, capability to search and browse the terms) and the usability for theLAURIN-thesaurus (complete list see Annex 1). Additional other classification systemsused by journalists or newspapers have been evaluated.• A technical meeting with all other LAURIN developers was held in Rome in September inorder to harmonise the technical approach.• A paper on the functions of the LAURIN indexing system was published through the ftpsiteof the project in order to give all partners the chance to give their feedback.Additional to this rather theoretical paper a mock up version of the future LAURINindexing module was created in order to have a practical example to discuss on.
