<strong>Graduate</strong> Catalog: Section 10.8.1THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA GRADUATE CATALOGTable <strong>of</strong> Contents > College <strong>of</strong> Education10.8 DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM and INSTRUCTIONDepartment Head: Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Miguel Mantero, Office: 201C Graves Hall<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Curriculum and Instruction consists <strong>of</strong> the following:10.8.1 Elementary Education Program10.8.2 Programs in Secondary Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning10.8.1 ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM (CEE)Admission RequirementsAdmission requirements for the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> (Admission Criteria) and the College <strong>of</strong> Education (GeneralAdmission) are detailed in earlier sections <strong>of</strong> this <strong>catalog</strong>.MA Degree RequirementsA minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 hrs <strong>of</strong> course credit must be earned, as follows: curriculum and teaching, 6 hrs; foundations <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional studies, 3 hrs; evaluation <strong>of</strong> teaching and learning, 3 hrs; teaching field, 12 hrs; electives (which may bespecified), 6 hrs. If the special education requirement has not been fulfilled, the student may be required to completean additional 3-hour survey course in special education. A list <strong>of</strong> courses the fulfill these requirements are listed onthe webpage <strong>of</strong> the Elementary Education Program or contact the program secretary in 204 Graves Hall. Studentsmay not count more than 6 hrs in certain seminar/workshop/problems courses toward the completion <strong>of</strong> the degree.A maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 hrs <strong>of</strong> approved transfer credit (maximum <strong>of</strong> 9 from UAH/UAB) may be applied to the degree.Students should see their advisors regarding which courses are appropriate for transfer credit.Nontraditional, Alternative Initial Teacher Certification ProgramA minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 semester hours <strong>of</strong> specific <strong>graduate</strong> credit plus some under<strong>graduate</strong> prerequisites is required forthe certificate. <strong>The</strong> program <strong>of</strong> study must be planned with an advisor. Also, see the Elementary EducationProgram webpage.EdS Degree RequirementsA minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 hrs <strong>of</strong> appropriate work beyond the MA degree and the completion <strong>of</strong> a research paper are requiredfor the educational specialist degree. Admission requires appropriate educational experiences. <strong>The</strong> total hours <strong>of</strong><strong>graduate</strong> work beyond the MA degree must be at least 30 hrs, as follows: educational research project, 3 hrs;teaching field courses, 12 hrs; foundations <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional studies, 3 hrs; research, 6 hrs; electives (which may bespecified), 6 hrs. Courses that fulfill these requirements are listed on the EdS Program in Elementary Educationwebpage or a list may be obtained from the departmental secretary in 204 Graves Hall. A maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 hrs <strong>of</strong>approved transfer credit (maximum <strong>of</strong> 9 hrs from UAB/UAH) may be applied toward the degree.Class AA Certificate Required CoursesA minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 hrs <strong>of</strong> appropriate work beyond the MA degree is required for the Class AA certificate (see EdSabove). Students who are pursuing certification options must be certain that their planned programs meet allcertification requirements according to programs approved by the state department <strong>of</strong> education. Approved programcheck sheets are available from the program <strong>of</strong>fice. Students who earned initial credit toward Class AA pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcertification during fall 1992 or later must enroll in and complete the EdS Program in Elementary Education. Three hours.Designed to expand knowledge and competencies <strong>of</strong> elementary teachers <strong>of</strong> science with specific focus on currentstandards, research, and inquiry models <strong>of</strong> instruction.CEE 516 Social Sciences in the Elementary <strong>School</strong>.
