Adyar Pamphlets <strong>The</strong> <strong>Occult</strong> <strong>Teachings</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Christ</strong>... No. 179“From Prome<strong>the</strong>us <strong>to</strong> Jesus, and from Him <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest Adept as <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> lowest disciple, every revealer<strong>of</strong> mysteries has had <strong>to</strong> become a Chres<strong>to</strong>s, a 'man <strong>of</strong> Sorrow', and a martyr. (S.D. 3, 89)“...<strong>The</strong> New Testament, <strong>the</strong> Acts and <strong>the</strong> Epistles — however much <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical figure <strong>of</strong> Jesus may betrue — all are symbolical and allegorical sayings, and that 'it was not Jesus but Paul who was <strong>the</strong> realfounder <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christ</strong>ianity'; [Page 16] but it was not <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial Church <strong>Christ</strong>ianity at any rate. '<strong>The</strong> discipleswere called <strong>Christ</strong>ians first in Antioch', <strong>the</strong> Acts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Apostles (XI,26) [ And when he had found him, hebrought him un<strong>to</strong> Antioch. And it came <strong>to</strong> pass, that a whole year <strong>the</strong>y assembled <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong>church, and taught much people. And <strong>the</strong> disciples were called <strong>Christ</strong>ians first in Antioch.] tell us, and<strong>the</strong>y were not so called before, nor for a long time after, but simply Nazarenes. ( S.D. 3, 122)“And Paul was undeniably an Initiate. (S.D. 3, 123)Quoting from Isis Unveiled, H.P.B. writes:“Take Paul, read <strong>the</strong> little <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original that is left <strong>of</strong> him in <strong>the</strong> writings attributed <strong>to</strong> this brave, honest, sincere man, and see whe<strong>the</strong>r anyone can find a word <strong>the</strong>rein <strong>to</strong> show that Paulmeant by <strong>the</strong> word <strong>Christ</strong> anything more than <strong>the</strong> abstract ideal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> personal divinityindwelling in man. For Paul, <strong>Christ</strong> is not a person, but an embodied idea. 'If any man is in<strong>Christ</strong> he is a new creation, 'he is reborn, as after initiation, for <strong>the</strong> Lord is a Spirit — <strong>the</strong> spirit<strong>of</strong> man. Paul was <strong>the</strong> only one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> apostles who had unders<strong>to</strong>od <strong>the</strong> secret ideas underlying<strong>the</strong> teachings <strong>of</strong> Jesus, although he had never met him.“But Paul himself was not infallible or perfect.“Bent upon inaugurating a new and broad reform, one embracing <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> humanity, hesincerely set his own doctrines far above <strong>the</strong> wisdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ages, above <strong>the</strong> ancient mysteriesand final revelation <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Epoptae....” (S.D. 3, 123-124)....“<strong>The</strong> Nazars — or set apart — were a class <strong>of</strong> Chaldean <strong>The</strong>urgists or Initiates. (S.D. 3,124)“It is shown in Isis Unveiled that Jesus belonged <strong>to</strong> this class. (S.D. 3, 124) [Page 17]“<strong>The</strong> early Nazarenes and Chrestians”, “as Justin Martyr calls <strong>the</strong>m, “were <strong>the</strong> followers <strong>of</strong> Jesus, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>true Chres<strong>to</strong>s and <strong>Christ</strong>os <strong>of</strong> Initiation”. (S.D. 3, 87).......“<strong>The</strong> Nazarenes, who although <strong>the</strong>y existed long before <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christ</strong> and even before <strong>the</strong> laws<strong>of</strong> Moses, were Gnostics, and many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m Initiates. <strong>The</strong>y held <strong>the</strong>ir 'Mysteries <strong>of</strong> Life' in Nazara(ancient and modern Nazareth) and <strong>the</strong>ir doctrines are a faithful echo <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teachings <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Secret</strong><strong>Doctrine</strong>....” (S.D. 2, 101)Page 8
