It’s all about the ROIA look at the real cost of BIMTo many, there is a strong perception that investing in BIM seems like anextravagant and costly investment. The reality is that it could make youmuch more profitable and help you win business.First of all, lets look at that word “expensive”. In the1980s and 1990s 2D CAD replaced drawing boards inoffices around the world and formed a revolution in theway that we worked. You may well remember that back then a fairly basic PCwould have cost you around £2000. A CAD workstationwith added software plus a highly paid user with allthe extra training that was required, then coupled withthe implementation and learning curve, generatedsubstantial costs. Back then most people did not knowhow use a PC at all!Nowadays, PCs get cheaper by the day, everyone canuse them and we all have the necessary furnitureand additional equipment needed to set up a BIMworkstation. In fact setting up a basic BIM user witheverything that he/she needs is just over half of whatit cost in the ’80s.Also, compared to CAD, the return on investment hasbeen proven to be remarkably more than break even.In the McGraw Hill SmartMarket report (2010) 46% ofBIM users recorded a ROI of better than break even, and 20% reported ROI of over 100%, and that was threeyears ago and based on the extremely limited toolsavailable at that time. With the revolutionary tools such as ArtrA nowavailable, which make the right asset informationavailable to everyone, on or off site, whenever theyneed it, these ROI statistics are already a thing of thepast. The efficiencies already being made by removingmisinformation and waste on site are showing overallproject cost savings of around 15%-20% of the totalproject cost. If a sub-contractor can save 1%-3% oftheir total project value, (and some already have) thismight easily double their profits. The cost of a few BIMworkstations quickly pails into insignificance. If you don’t embrace BIM youwill get left behind. It’s not justgovernment mandating BIM andif you can’t demonstrate yourBIM credentials you soon won’tbe able to bid on many projects. But embracing it will give you acompetitive advantage and saveyou money! If you need help on where tostart, just contact the BIM Sphereteam.A LICENCE TO SAVE MONEY8
