INTRODUCTIONThe Introduction to Journalism subcourse, part of the US ArmyJournalist MOS 71Q, Skill Levels 1 and 2 course, is designed toteach the meaning of news, the basic elements which create news,required elements of news stories, the role of journalism in theArmy; the skills, techniques and attitudes which make good Armyjournalists; the function of Army journalists; Army newspaperoperations; the methods of gathering news; and interviewingtechniques.Lesson 1: Introduction to JournalismTask: Define terms related to journalism, learn the Elements ofNews, understand the function of Army public affairsspecialists (journalists), and recognize the differencesbetween unit and community newspapers.Condition: Given the information in this lesson.Standard: Define journalistic terms, describe the Elements ofNews, know the function of public affairs specialists intheir role as journalists, and recognize the differencesbetween unit and community newspapers.Lesson 2: What Makes a Good Journalist?Task: Recognize the practices of good journalists, understand howjournalists work within the Army, learn how decisions aremade in Army newspaper operations, and recognize trainingand duty commitments.Condition: Given the information in this lesson.Standard: Apply the practices of good journalists, recognizedecision-makers in Army newspaper operations, and understandthe requirements of training and duty commitments.Lesson 3: Gathering the NewsTask: Understand the various types of beat systems and learn whatsources of information are available to the Army journalist.v
