In the case of extreme personalor family hardship, or in casesinvolving extenuatingcircumstances, the Dean ofEnrollment and StudentServices may waive the aboveregulations.FEES FOR RETAKING COURSESSection 240.124 <strong>Florida</strong> Statutesmandates that each studentattempting the same non-repeatableundergraduate course more than twicebeginning with the Fall Semester 1997shall be assessed an additional percredit hour surcharge beginning withthe third attempt. Attempted hoursinclude those hours dropped, withdrawnand repeated under NFCC forgivenesspolicy which are fee liable.• Any course taken prior to thefall 1997.• Attempts taken at aninstitution other than NFCC.• Any non fee-liable coursedropped or withdrawn.Out-of-state fees are assessed toindividuals upon the third attempt tosatisfactorily complete a course thatis not designated as a repeatablecourse in the <strong>College</strong> Catalog andcourse schedule. The additionaltuition and fees may be waived by theDean of Academic Affairs. To applyfor consideration for the waiver ofthe additional fees that are assessedon the third attempt, the studentmust submit a completed Petition forExemption from Full Cost of Instructionform, a letter addressed to the Dean ofAcademic Affairs, and a copy of theiracademic record. The petition must besubmitted and approved by the endof the drop/add period for the term inwhich the student would like to attemptthe course. A fourth attempt may beallowed only through an academicappeals process based on majorextenuating circumstances. Contact theOffice of Enrollment Services formore information.6TUITION-FREE COURSES FOR THOSESIXTY-FIVE YEARS OF AGE & OLDERAdults 65 years of age or older mayapply for admission as a senior citizen.The admission requirements applicableto students under this category includethe completion of an application asnon-degree seeking/senior citizenand payment of the one-time $20.00application fee. This is a special categorystatus and is not an alternate form ofadmission for the career and technicalor associate degree programs. Thoseapplying for admission as senior citizensmay register up to 4 credit hours persemester. Tuition is waived but thestudent is responsible for the purchaseof textbooks, instructional materials, andother fees required for the course.CANCELLED COURSESThe <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to cancelcourses when necessary. Students willreceive full refunds for cancelled courses.COLLEGE CLOSING PROCEDURESFOR WEATHER EMERGENCYThe <strong>College</strong> switchboard will have itsmessage modified, conditions permitting,to indicate the closing status. TheGovernor has created an Internet sitethat directs the public to shelter during ahurricane evacuation. The web address iswww.floridadisaster.org.If the <strong>College</strong> is not closed, but yourarea has emergency weather situationsthat may prevent you from attendingclass, you are advised to make your owndecision concerning your safety. You areresponsible for discussing the situationwith your instructor to determine how todeal with the extenuating circumstances.FIRST CLASS MEETING /ATTENDANCE REVIEWYou are expected to attend the first classmeeting. All courses are monitoredfor regular attendance by students.Students who register for classes, buthave not attended after the close ofregistration, will be withdrawn as a “noshow.”ENROLLMENT VERIFICATIONAll student enrollment verification will beby official request only. Verification letterswill not be provided until after the end ofthe drop/add period. Verification will bemailed approximately 2 working days fromthe date of the request. Students whoneed enrollment verification should makea written request directly to: EnrollmentServices, <strong>North</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong>, 325 NW Turner Davis Drive,Madison, FL 32340. Faxed requestswill be accepted. FAX: 850/973-1697.WITHDRAWING FROM A CLASSStudents who officially withdraw from aclass by the published deadline receivea “W” grade for the class. A “W” countsas an attempt. If you stop attendingclass without officially withdrawing, youwill receive a grade of “WF”. It is up tothe student to initiate the withdrawalprocedure. The Withdrawal Form mustbe completed and processed in theRegistrar’s Office to officially withdrawfrom a course. Students withdrawingfrom all courses must complete theWithdrawal Permit. The WithdrawalPermit is designed to document that thestudent has satisfied all obligations tothe <strong>College</strong>.SPECIAL INFORMATION FORCOLLEGE PREP STUDENTSThere are additional options forcollege prep students. In accordancewith <strong>Florida</strong> law, students mayuse Adult Basic Education, AdultSecondary Education, or privateprovider instruction as an alternativeto traditional college preparatoryinstruction.EXCESS HOURS ADVISORYSTATEMENTSection 1009.286, <strong>Florida</strong> Statutes,establishes an “excess hour” surchargefor a student seeking a baccalaureatedegree at a state university. It iscritical that students including thoseentering <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>College</strong>s are awareof the potential for additional coursefees. “Excess hours” are defined ashours that go beyond 120% of thehours required for a baccalaureatedegree program. For example, if thelength of the program is 120 credithours, the student may be subjectto an excess hour surcharge for anycredits attempted beyond 144 credithours (12 x 120%). All students whoseeducational plan may include earning abachelor’s degree should make everyeffort to enroll in and successfullycomplete those courses that arerequired for their intended major ontheir first attempt. <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>College</strong>students intending to transfer to astate university should identify a majoror “transfer program” early and be
