Humankind Heroes: Dewan SeamanFor Dewan Seaman (Crude I/Aromatics),spending five minutes to update hisvolunteer hours in <strong>Chevron</strong> Humankind ismore than worth the effort. Last fall, hesuccessfully applied for a Humankind grantto purchase new computers for CentralElementary in George County, where hisson Landen is a fourth-grader. His oldestson, Jared (17), also attended Central.“Five minutes of entering your hourscould mean $500 or $1,000 in grantmoney,” he said. “When you see how muchof a difference that money can make in a school, there’s no reasonnot to do it.”Central Elementary principal Patti Wilkins said the 12 newcomputers have made a tremendous difference in the school.“At the beginning of the schoo yearl, our classrooms had one ortwo outdated computers for student use,” Wilkins said. “I beganreplacing those classrooms with updated computers with moneyfrom the <strong>Chevron</strong> grant. Now in grades 3 through 6 (13classrooms) I have added encomputing units that each provide 3new student computers. The grant has provided four of these sets.”The computers are used for classroom projects, the AcceleratedReader program, and learning programs such as Study Island andClassworks.“We have only one computer lab for grades3-6, and students are able to access thesecomputers for 30 minutes daily,” Wilkinsexplained. “With the additional classroomcomputers, students have extra computer timedaily.”Dewan said this computer access is criticalfor students.“The computers are so important becauseyou have to know how to use them nowadays,”Dewan agreed. “This grant is not just helpingthe school right now - it will continue to help in the future.”Dewan will also continue to help in the future. He said Ms.Wilkins keeps a wish list for possible future grants, and remindshim to keep up with his volunteer hours. “I like seeing that I’vemade some kind of a difference in my kids’ school,” Dewan said.Patti Wilkins said the Humankind grants have been very helpful.“The money that we have received from <strong>Chevron</strong> over the pasttwo years has been a tremendous gift to our school,” Wilkins said.“That money along with our fundraising projects has allowed us tocreate small labs for grades K-2 and add the additional computersin our classrooms. I am so thankful to Mr. Seaman for getting thisprogram started in my school.”Career Day Draws Hundreds to <strong>Pascagoula</strong> <strong>Refinery</strong><strong>Chevron</strong> <strong>Pascagoula</strong> <strong>Refinery</strong> hosted itsfirst <strong>Chevron</strong> Career Day in November,drawing hundreds of local high schoolstudents interested in learning about theskills and education required for jobs in thepetroleum industry.Students began with a welcome andsafety message, followed by a tour of the<strong>Refinery</strong> Training Center. There they learnedabout the Mississippi Gulf Coast CommunityCollege Process Technology Program as wellas the many career opportunities at<strong>Chevron</strong>.The students then boarded their schoolbus for a windshield tour of the <strong>Refinery</strong>,and a visit to the Utilities Control Room.About 25 students were in each tour group.“The size of the groups was excellent,” saidGautier High School teacher Bill Massey.“Everyone was afforded an opportunity toobserve the displays in the Training Center,<strong>Chevron</strong> employees explained their areas of expertise to high schoolstudents during the first <strong>Chevron</strong> Career Day in November.and were welcome to participate inconversation with the <strong>Chevron</strong> representatives.All of the representatives weremore than willing to provide informationon job responsibilities, educationalrequirements, personal career background information and, mostimportantly, answer questions.”<strong>Chevron</strong> community affairs representativeAmy Brandenstein said theevent’s success was the result of themany excellent volunteers.“We had a huge team of <strong>Chevron</strong>employees involved with this project,” shesaid, “and everyone was committed tomaking sure these students had anexceptional experience.“<strong>Chevron</strong> has a long history ofsupporting our local schools, and wewere happy to do so again with thisCareer Day program.”<strong>Chevron</strong> <strong>Pascagoula</strong> <strong>Refinery</strong> will celebrate50 years of excellence in 2013Plans are underway for several projects to mark this important milestone, and we need your photos and other<strong>Chevron</strong> memorabilia from the last five decades.
