As testament to thesustainability of the REACH infant mortality and healthdisparity work, the project was just refunded for anotherfive years, through 2012, and designated as a Center ofExcellence in the Elimination of Health Disparities underthe CDC’s REACH US program. Some REACH 2010interventions have become “institutionalized” within theregular programming and operating budgets of partneragencies. Some are now being supported by philanthropicgrant resources. Opportunities to leverage furthercommunity and financial commitments continue to bepursued.13. Education:a. Thisconcept hosted it’s inaugural meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana during the weekof 7/16/2012 and is launching in four cities (Cincinnati, Ohio; Milwaukee,Wisconsin; New Orleans, Louisiana; and a city in northern California)a. Goal: To eliminate disparities in child and family healthb. Objective: Establish (10) Kellogg Best Babies Zones (BBZs), with the firstand primary objective of closing the infant mortality gap in participatingcommunities in 10 years.c. Background: Despite advancements in clinical medicine and public health,racial-ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in child and family health persist.A new, bold, transformative approach is needed. The health gap in MCH is an underappreciated contributor to theachievement gap in schools that is a cause of poor productivity, higherrate of poverty and other national and social ills; closing the health gapin MCH is an important prerequisite to closing the achievement gapd.
