There are three key differences betweenconventional printing and digital thatcan impact a paper’s performance onthe digital press:Paper Grain Paper grain is a key considerationthroughout the production process.Typical digital presses put paper throughits paces, as it’s very common for paperto get turned, stopped and started duringa job. Paper jams and registrationproblems are a common result of thesemovements if you’re using the wrongpaper. Choosing paper with a projectappropriategrain direction not onlyassists in smooth operation of the pressbut also affects finishing processesand paper performance. For all thesereasons, Sappi is providing stockingsupport based on optimized paper graindirection for text weights (grain long)and cover weights (grain short).Toner Adhesion Poor toner adhesion canlead to scuffing, scratches and rub-off.Therefore, paper used in high productiondigital color presses must be properlyacclimated to achieve the best results.Temperature and moisture content arekey in this process. Both are essentialfor the paper to attain the correct electrostaticcharge during printing, which,in turn, will optimize image transfer andtoner adhesion. The entire Sappi digitalline-up has been specially engineeredand quality tested to meet the toughestand most stringent adhesion challenges.High Temperatures During ProductionChoosing paper with propertiesdesigned for the specific digital printingequipment you use is critical. Manydigital printing systems use electrophotographicprocesses and dry tonersto fuse toner to the substrate at hightemperatures. In such cases, thefaster the digital press operates, themore heat it creates. Many digitalpapers fail to hold up under such hightemperatures. This can cause paperjams, curling, and a degradation in paperquality. To help safeguard you fromthese problems, Sappi has employedrigorous third-party testing to validateour digital press runnability.
