In theseventh grade, he decided to be a horsedoctor. He graduated from Boulder,Colorado High School at the beginningof World War II and studied for a yearat Pomona College in Claremont beforeserving in the United States Air Corps asa Second Lieutenant and radar navigator,flying B29s off the island of Guam. Steerereturned to Pomona College after his militaryservice and continued at the Universityof California at Davis, graduating as aveterinarian in 1953.In 1958, Steere was awarded a FulbrightScholarship to the Royal Collegeof Veterinary Medicine in Copenhagen,Denmark. By then married and fatherof four children, he moved his family toDenmark, where he practiced large-animalsurgery. Returning to the United States atthe end of his Fulbright, Steere became aneditor for American Veterinary Publicationsand started an equine practice inSanta Barbara, California. In 1964 hewon a Public Health Grant to the newPopulation Center at Harvard School ofPublic Health in Boston, planning to giveup veterinary work for academics andresearch after graduating with his Masterof Public Health degree. UC Davis friendand classmate Bill Kortum convinced himto migrate with his growing family toPetaluma in 1965 to establish an equinepractice instead.In addition to his veterinary practice,Steere taught a veterinary techniciancourse at Indian <strong>Valley</strong> College in Marinfor more than 30 years. In 2005, at 80 yearsold, he became the oldest man on record tocomplete the 100-mile Tevis Cup enduranceride, and in June <strong>2010</strong>, he teamedwith his son, Thom Steere, to compete inthe Ride & Tie Championship, successfullycompleting the 19-mile course at age 85.Steere is survived by his wife, D’Ann,eight children and their spouses and domesticpartners, seven grandchildren, andhis horse, Wesob.<strong>The</strong> Minnesota Horse Council announcesseveral funding programs available thisyear. <strong>The</strong>se are made possible by the successof the Minnesota Horse Expo.Scholarships: the twenty-fourth annualMHC/Tony Gasser Memorial Scholarshipsare offered for both high school seniors& undergrads, and for grad students(considered separately), to be used towardeducation that would further the applicant'scareer in and contributions to thehorse industry in Minnesota. Her daughter, Ali,competed at Youth World Show and herhusband, Lew, is an orthopedic surgeon intheir home of Rapid City, South Dakota.This year, more than 73 guests attendedthe special event, which included a fourcoursedinner and beverages. <strong>The</strong>re wasalso outstanding musical entertainmentprovided by Ken Murray, assistant trainerat High Point Performance Horses in PilotPoint, Texas, western entertainer DevonDawson and his band, and AQHA judgeand trainer Don Bell of Whitesboro, Texas.In its third year, the event has raisedmore than $20,000 to support the workof the Shirley Bowman Nutritional Clinicat the University of Oklahoma CancerInstitute."Many cancer patients cannot fight theirbattle when malnourished," Papendicksaid. With your donations, you haveprovided months of nutritional support tomany cancer patients."<strong>The</strong> clinic was established with helpfrom Rein in Cancer and by family andfriends in honor of the memory of ShirleyBowman, who died in 2004 after a longand courageous battle with breast cancer.Shirley's sister, "Shorty" Koger, ownerof Shorty's Caboy Hattery in OklahomaCity, was the driving force in encouragingsupport for the nutrition program at theOUCI."This special event just keeps gettingbetter and better.
