Marine Department should be consulted at an early stage as to whether anyprovision to permit a better gangplank or transfer system for the passengers can beincorporated in the design. Lifesaving equipment should be provided at suitable locationson the piers.2.10 AestheticsA pier may become a prominent feature on the seafront and its appearance may have a visualimpact on the surrounding landscape. Therefore, apart from meeting the functional andsafety requirements, the design of a pier should take into consideration the aesthetic aspectsto ensure that its appearance is in harmony with the environment. Some general guidelineshave been given in Chapter 8 of <strong>Part</strong> 1 of the <strong>Manual</strong>. Specific aspects are furtherelaborated in Chapter 6 of this part of the <strong>Manual</strong>.
