Role <strong>of</strong> Monju for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational scientific community‣ From <strong>the</strong> statement delivered dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> post-RCM Workshop at <strong>the</strong> University<strong>of</strong> Fukui on 19 April 2012: “…tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account that <strong>the</strong> Monju reactorrepresents <strong>the</strong> only available fast reactor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world able to host large scaleexperimental tests at power, <strong>the</strong> scientific community participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>IAEA</strong>CRP on “Benchmark analyses <strong>of</strong> Sodium Natural Convection <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UpperPlenum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MONJU reactor” welcome <strong>the</strong> restart <strong>of</strong> this reactor and, as aconsequence, <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> a new set <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmal-hydraulic testswhich would provide experimental data <strong>of</strong> primary importance for <strong>the</strong>development <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative Sodium-cooled <strong>Fast</strong> <strong>Reactor</strong>s at <strong>in</strong>ternational level”‣ From <strong>the</strong> key messages delivered to <strong>the</strong> press after <strong>the</strong> <strong>IAEA</strong>-JAEAInternational Workshop on Prevention and Mitigation <strong>of</strong> Severe Accidents <strong>in</strong>SFR (Tsuruga & Tokyo, 12-14 June 2012): “The design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prototype fastbreeder reactor Monju is already <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g evaluations <strong>of</strong>, and measuresaga<strong>in</strong>st, severe accidents based on <strong>the</strong> safety characteristics <strong>of</strong> SFRs. Therestart and operation <strong>of</strong> Monju will provide <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational SFR communitywith very useful experience to pave <strong>the</strong> way towards 4 th generation SFR”<strong>IAEA</strong> 15
