Whether competingat the NCAA Division III levelon one of Whitman’s sevenmen’s and seven women’svarsity squads, enjoying thecamaraderie of housemates inone of nine intramural sports,or facing a team from anothercollege in club competition,Whitman students take pleasurein athletics. They alsowork out on the College’scardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, hone theiragility on its climbing walls,and enjoy simply expressingthemselves outdoors—fromunicycling around campusto turning cartwheels onAnkeny Field.Brien Sheedy, director of Whitman’sOutdoor Program, has summitedmany of the world’s most challengingpeaks—including Mt. Everest.In 2011, Whitman’s men’s swimteam placed first in the nation inGPA among all Division III swimteams. With a combined gradepoint average of 3.55, the teamillustrates Whitman’s commitmentto the scholar-athlete.
