Whether competingat the NCAA Division III levelon one of <strong>Whitman</strong>’s sevenmen’s and seven women’svarsity squads, enjoying thecamaraderie of housemates inone of nine intramural sports,or facing a team from anothercollege in club competition,<strong>Whitman</strong> students take pleasurein athletics. They alsowork out on the <strong>College</strong>’scardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, hone theiragility on its climbing walls,and enjoy simply expressingthemselves outdoors—fromunicycling around campusto turning cartwheels onAnkeny Field.Brien Sheedy, director of <strong>Whitman</strong>’sOutdoor Program, has summitedmany of the world’s most challengingpeaks—including Mt. Everest.In 2011, <strong>Whitman</strong>’s men’s swimteam placed first in the nation inGPA among all Division III swimteams. With a combined gradepoint average of 3.55, the teamillustrates <strong>Whitman</strong>’s commitmentto the scholar-athlete.
