19th Annual Resident Research Day
The Department of Medicine 19th annual
Residents’ Research Day was held at Liuna
Station in Hamilton on Wednesday, May 21,
2008.
This full-day event began with the judging
of nine oral presentations and 32 clinical and
16 scientific posters - an increase of 10 posters
from last year. Plenary sessions were held
during lunch in front of a large audience of
residents and faculty. Dr. Joy Liao, the recipient
of the 2007 Core IM Resident Research award,
presented an update on her research entitled
Predicting Functional Outcomes Following
Major Elective Non-Vascular Surgery Using
Simple Frailty Measures. Supervisor: Dr. Martin
O’Donnell. The day’s guest speaker, Dr. Jack
Hirsh, gave an informative talk entitled How to
Ask the Right Research Question.
Dr. Shariq Haider, Director of Resident
Research, extended appreciation and thanks to
Drs. Donnie Arnold, David Armstrong and Kara
Nerenberg for their difficult job of pre judging
all the abstract submissions; Drs. Sonia Anand,
Gerard Cox and Agnes Lee for judging the scientific
posters and orals; and Drs. Hugh Fuller, Raj
Hanmiah and David Higgins for judging the clinical
posters at Research Day.

Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Chair of the Judging for the
day, thanked Dr. Shariq Haider and Dr. Parveen
Wasi for instilling curiosity and the practice of
research in our residents. Dr. O’Byrne extended
his appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Gail
Trevisani for the planning and organization of
another successful year.

With a closure to the Research Day, the evening
continued with the presentation of the
Residency Program Awards for Residents and
Faculty:
Dr. Ameen Patel presented the annual Jeff
Ginsberg Subspecialty Resident Award for
a candidate who demonstrates excellence in
professionalism, leadership and education.
Nominees are received from Subspecialty
Program Directors for a resident who consistently
displays outstanding performance in clinical
rotations, excellence in teaching, research and
exemplary professionalism and commitment to
academic achievement. This award has been
made possible by a generous donation from a
patient of Dr. Jeff Ginsberg. The 2008 winner is
Dr. Sherali Rahim, PGY6 Cardiology.
Dr. Shariq Haider promoted the annual Core
IM Resident Research Award to support trainees
in pursuing original research while getting early
exposure and practical experience around all
aspects of research. There were no winners this
year, but Dr. Haider urged residents to continue
with the hard work medicine residents have
demonstrated.
The resident-selected Internist and
Subspecialty Awards for Excellence in Clinical
Teaching went to Dr. Jim Gibson for the General
Internist Award and Dr. Nader Khalidi for the
Subspecialist Award. Along with receiving an
individual plaque, their names will be engraved
on the wall plaque displayed in the Department
of Medicine Residency Training Program Office.
The Faculty Appreciation Award was presented
by Dr. Parveen Wasi to Dr. Marianne Talman
for her continued support of the residents and
the Program.
