19th Annual Resident Research Day<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Medicine 19th annual<br />

Residents’ Research Day was held at Liuna<br />

Station in Hamilton on Wednesday, May 21,<br />

2008.<br />

This full-day event began with the judging<br />

<strong>of</strong> nine oral presentations and 32 clinical and<br />

16 scientific posters - an increase <strong>of</strong> 10 posters<br />

from last year. Plenary sessions were held<br />

during lunch in front <strong>of</strong> a large audience <strong>of</strong><br />

residents and faculty. Dr. Joy Liao, the recipient<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 2007 Core IM Resident Research award,<br />

presented an update on her research entitled<br />

Predicting Functional Outcomes Following<br />

Major Elective Non-Vascular Surgery Using<br />

Simple Frailty Measures. Supervisor: Dr. Martin<br />

O’Donnell. The day’s guest speaker, Dr. Jack<br />

Hirsh, gave an informative talk entitled How to<br />

Ask the Right Research Question.<br />

Dr. Shariq Haider, Director <strong>of</strong> Resident<br />

Research, extended appreciation and thanks to<br />

Drs. Donnie Arnold, David Armstrong and Kara<br />

Nerenberg for their difficult job <strong>of</strong> pre judging<br />

all the abstract submissions; Drs. Sonia Anand,<br />

Gerard Cox and Agnes Lee for judging the scientific<br />

posters and orals; and Drs. Hugh Fuller, Raj<br />

Hanmiah and David Higgins for judging the clinical<br />

posters at Research Day.<br />

Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Chair <strong>of</strong> the Judging for the<br />

day, thanked Dr. Shariq Haider and Dr. Parveen<br />

research in our residents. Dr. O’Byrne extended<br />

his appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Gail<br />

Trevisani for the planning and organization <strong>of</strong><br />

another successful year.<br />

With a closure to the Research Day, the evening<br />

continued with the presentation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Residency Program <strong>Awards</strong> for Residents and<br />

<strong>Faculty</strong>:<br />

Dr. Ameen Patel presented the annual Jeff<br />

Ginsberg Subspecialty Resident Award for<br />

a candidate who demonstrates excellence in<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism, leadership and education.<br />

Nominees are received from Subspecialty<br />

Program Directors for a resident who consistently<br />

displays outstanding performance in clinical<br />

rotations, excellence in teaching, research and<br />

exemplary pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and commitment to<br />

academic achievement. This award has been<br />

made possible by a generous donation from a<br />

patient <strong>of</strong> Dr. Jeff Ginsberg. The 2008 winner is<br />

Dr. Sherali Rahim, PGY6 Cardiology.<br />

Dr. Shariq Haider promoted the annual Core<br />

IM Resident Research Award to support trainees<br />

in pursuing original research while getting early<br />

exposure and practical experience around all<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> research. There were no winners this<br />

year, but Dr. Haider urged residents to continue<br />

with the hard work medicine residents have<br />

demonstrated.<br />

The resident-selected Internist and<br />

Subspecialty <strong>Awards</strong> for Excellence in Clinical<br />

Teaching went to Dr. Jim Gibson for the General<br />

Internist Award and Dr. Nader Khalidi for the<br />

Subspecialist Award. Along with receiving an<br />

individual plaque, their names will be engraved<br />

on the wall plaque displayed in the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medicine Residency Training Program Office.<br />

The <strong>Faculty</strong> Appreciation Award was presented<br />

by Dr. Parveen Wasi to Dr. Marianne Talman<br />

for her continued support <strong>of</strong> the residents and<br />

the Program.
