ASSOCIATION NEWSGulf Coast <strong>Association</strong> holds CoastalRetr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>Mississippi</strong> forumThe Gulf Coast <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>REALTORS</strong> ®(GCAR) received a Housing Opportunity Grantfrom the National <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>REALTORS</strong> ® (NAR)to assist in promoting the Coastal Retr<strong>of</strong>it<strong>Mississippi</strong> (CRM)project. The CRM program ismanaged by the <strong>Mississippi</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>Finance and Administration. <strong>Mississippi</strong>Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is providingthe funds to pay up to 75 percent <strong>of</strong> themitigation cost. Phase one <strong>of</strong> the project providesgrants to homeowners in the three coastalcounties-- Harrison, Hancock and Jackson.The purpose <strong>of</strong> the CRM project is to help homeownersstrengthen their homes against winddamage by installing specialized ro<strong>of</strong> retr<strong>of</strong>its,doors and shutters and to help homeowners withthe mitigation <strong>of</strong> potential damage in order tohopefully reduce the cost <strong>of</strong> insurance.GCAR created a Task Force which was chaired byKen Austin. Using the $3000 grant from NAR andmatching funds from the Gulf Coast <strong>Association</strong>,the Task Force worked with the MS Department<strong>of</strong> Finance and Administration to set up an openforum. On May 1, GCAR hosted a forum at<strong>Mississippi</strong> Gulf Coast Community College auditoriumwhereby the MS Department <strong>of</strong> Financeand Administration conducted an open forumfor homeowners to learn about the program.REALTOR ® Community Service DayplannedLocal boards from across the state have designatedNovember 2, 2012 for the second annualREALTOR ® Community Service Day. The communityservice day was forged and implementedby the 2011 class <strong>of</strong> LeadershipMAR and wasenvisioned as a means to reach out to local communitiesin an effort to recognize <strong>REALTORS</strong> ® asthe go-to source for economic development,community service and political advocacy.2012 LeadershipMAR class underwayThe 2012 class <strong>of</strong> LeadershipMAR recently completedthe second retreat in their year-long curriculumat the Duncan Gray Center near Canton.The class is working on a project to be presentedat its completion that will benefit MAR membersand <strong>Mississippi</strong> homeowners. LMAR hasupcoming retreats scheduled at Tara WildlifeReserve and during the MAR Convention & EXPOin Tunica. Stacy’s experiences as an educator andlibrarian are varied and lend themselves well to her new positionat MAR as Marketing and Administrative Assistant.StacyGraduating with honors from the University <strong>of</strong> Southern<strong>Mississippi</strong>, Stacy served on numerous committees as both amember and a project leader during her career.
