FAREWELL MARION REDSTONEIt is with deep and heartfelt sadness that we report the death of Marion Redstone on 10December 2008. Marion was a dear friend and a key member of Bio-Balance HealthAssociation. She will be sorely missed not only within the Association but also by theautism support community throughout Australia and by all who have been associatedwith the annual Sydney Outreach Clinics and Conferences which she organized with theactive support of Bio-Balance Health – particularly the patients and families whoattended the Outreach patient assessment consultations and the medical practitionerswho participated in the physician training.Marion first became involved with Bio-Balance Health when she organized a meeting forDr Bill Walsh to address a Sydney audience about his work in the fields of autism andmental and behavioural disorders when he was passing through Sydney on his first visitto Australia in 2004 organized by Bio-Balance Health to train the first Australian medicalpractitioner in the techniques of biochemical assessment and complementary nutritionaltreatment based on his own and the late Dr Carl Pfeiffer’s research. It was Marion’s initiative that led to the first Sydney Outreach Clinic and Conference in2005 and it was her organizing ability and drive – ably supported by her husbandMichael and her daughter Marnie and with the active support and co-operation of Bio-Balance Health – that made this and subsequent Sydney Outreach events such anoutstanding success, to the lasting benefit of the hundreds of patients and families andthe dozens of medical practitioners who participated in these events. For some two years prior to her death, Marion battled persistent invasive brain cancerbut this did not daunt her and she continued to be actively involved in all her chosenfields of endeavour until the last. Throughout her treatments for this aggressive disorderand despite often intense pain she continued to work tirelessly and bravely promotingawareness of autism and mental and behavioural disorders and their effectivetreatment. It is with great sorrow but also with great pride in continuing the outstanding workinitiated by Marion that Bio-Balance Health has assumed full responsibility fororganizing the 2009 Sydney Outreach Clinic and Conference. We are fortunate inhaving the continued involvement of Marion’s daughter Marnie to act as the OutreachCo-ordinator.Reprinted below is the eulogy to Marion written by Dr Bill Walsh and read at her funeralceremony on 16 December 2008:A Tribute to Marion RedstoneI write these words with a heavy heart. I have lost one of my dearestfriends in the entire world.I met Marion several years ago at a conference in San Diego. She wassearching the world for effective treatment for her beloved twin grandsonsdiagnosed with autism. Doctors had told her that autism was untreatable, but Marion refused to believe it and became a tireless and dynamic fighteragainst this terrible disorder. I soon learned that Marion knew more aboutautism research & treatment than most of the “expert” speakers at theconference.4

In the course of studying treatment options for her grandchildren, sheparticipated fully at various Autism support groups and organized manysmall conferences aiming to raise awareness in parents that recovery ispossible for these children. She later founded the non-profit LighthouseHealth Foundation. Marion has met with countless families and guidedthem to effective treatment. Many reported their child achieved aremarkable recovery from this dreaded condition. In 2005, Marion organized a “Sydney Outreach” program in whichinternational experts train Australian physicians in advanced therapies. Her dedicated efforts have already resulted in the training of 40physicians and benefits to many hundreds of Australian families. Thisprogram is the model for a new international program with the goal oftraining 1,000 doctors. This remarkable woman has pioneered a programthat may eventually change the face of medicine and benefit millions ofpeople. From the beginning, Marion refused to receive any payment for herhundreds of hours devoted to this project each year. She was a truevolunteer in the best sense of the word.Marion telephoned last month and we talked for nearly an hour. She neveronce complained of pain and discomfort from her advancing cancer, andthe conversation concentrated on ways to improve our charitableprograms. She expressed pride in the news of a successful physiciantrainingprogram in Norway. She was absolutely joyous in the remarkableprogress of her grandchildren. She told me she was going to continue herfight to help the children of the world for every day that God allowed herto live.I am in awe of Marion’s beautiful volunteer spirit, her selfless devotion tothe children of Australia, and her remarkable organizational skills. Theworld has lost a great soul.Bill Walsh, Ph.D.MARION REDSTONE MEMORIAL FUNDTo honour the memory of this outstanding person in a way directly related to her lifetimeendeavours, Bio-Balance Health Association has decided to set up the MARIONREDSTONE MEMORIAL FUND. The Fund will be dedicated exclusively to receivingand disbursing donations subscribed specifically for the purpose of assisting patientsand families to meet the costs, either in whole or in part, of attending a Walsh ResearchInstitute Sydney Outreach Clinic in cases where their financial circumstances wouldotherwise preclude them from doing so.Donations will be tax-deductible, as are all other donations to Bio-Balance HealthAssociation Inc.5

Many families caring for a child or children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD andother developmental disorders and many patients with mental disorders lack thefinancial resources to meet the costs involved in attending an Outreach Clinic patientconsultation which could open the door to effective treatment for the disorder involved.Sponsorship or part sponsorship in such cases could transform their lives. The following letter from a sponsorship recipient illustrates the crucial difference suchassistance can make:Bio-Balance Health Assoc. Zinc Deficiency and BehaviouralDisordersDr William J WalshJuly 2003INTRODUCTIONMost Americans receive all the zinc theyneed if they have a reasonably wellbalanceddiet involving the major foodgroups. However, many persons are bornwith a metal-metabolism disorder thatresults in zinc depletion regardless of diet.Zinc is a component of more than 80enzymes. High concentrations have beenfound in brain hippocampus, and manymedical researchers believe that zinc is aneurotransmitter. Low zinc levels at thesesites could reduce the inhibition of neuronactivity, thus leading to abnormal behaviour. The discovery of zinc "finger proteins" in thepast decade has led to a vastly improvedunderstanding of how cells replicate anddivide. Their role in behaviour is not yetclear, but could be involved in the transportor availability of zinc. Recent research hasshown zinc to be far more important thanpreviously believed and low levels of zincare associated with behaviour disorders. Many of the patients of the Carl PfeifferTreatment Center suffer from behaviourdisorders. The most common ones areattention deficit hyperactive disorder(ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder(ODD), obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD), and conduct disorder (CD). Thesepatients typically have a history of extensivecounselling and multiple medications andmany have experienced residential care. They represent a narrow and ratheruncharacteristic segment of the generalpopulation.A high percentage of behaviour disorderedpersons exhibit abnormal levels of copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, calcium, magnesiumand manganese in blood, urine, and tissues, based on chemical analysis results fromthousands of patients. With regard to zinc, this condition appears to involve amalfunction of the metal-binding proteinmetallothionein. Most of these patients havesymptoms of zinc deficiency along withdepressed levels of zinc in their bloodplasma. The high incidence of zinc deficiency inassaultive young males was illustrated in arecent study (1) , which found elevated serumcopper and depressed plasma zincconcentration, compared to normal controls. This study confirmed our clinicalobservations of zinc depletion in more than4,000 behaviour-disordered patients. Our clinical observations and research haveindicated that the copper/zinc ratio appearsto be more decisively important than eitherof the individual metals alone. Zincdeficiency often results in elevated bloodlevels of copper, due to the dynamiccompetition of these metals in the body.Elevated blood copper has been associatedwith episodic violence, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, and depression.DIAGNOSIS OF ZINC DEFICIENCYZinc deficiency is difficult to diagnose sinceno single laboratory test or combination oftests is decisive in every case. For example, blood levels are sometimes normal in zincdeficient persons due to homeostasis. Urineand hair tissue levels are often elevated inzinc deficiency because of "short circuiting"of zinc through the body and high rates ofexcretion. The two principal factors that lead to adiagnosis of zinc deficiency are:1) depressed plasma zinc, and 2) presenceof clinical symptoms of zinc depletion, whichare alleviated by zinc supplementation (2 -- 7) .Since zinc tolerance tests show plasmalevels to be affected for 6 hours followingzinc supplementation (8 -- 9) , zinc supplementsare avoided for 24 hours prior to sampling ofplasma. The clinical symptoms associated with zincdeficiency or depletion include the following:(10 – 14)* Eczema, acne, and/or psoriasis* Poor wound healing, including leg ulcers(15 – 16)and oral lesions* Lines of Beau on the fingernails (17)(18 – 21)* Growth retardation* Delayed sexual maturation (22) ,* Hypogeusia or poor taste acuity (23 – 24) ,and*Chronic immunodeficiency and frequentinfections (25 – 26) .A "working diagnosis" of zinc deficiency canbe made if clinical symptoms of zincdeficiency are clearly evident from the initialphysical examination and medical history.7

Usually more than one or the abovesymptoms are present in zinc deficiency. This initial diagnosis is later supported ornegated by laboratory analysis for plasmazinc along with observed response (or nonresponse)to zinc supplementation.Plasma zinc is generally retested andsymptoms evaluated after 4-6 months oftreatment to determine if dosages needadjustment.TREATMENT OF ZINC DEPLETIONZinc depletion is corrected bysupplementation with zinc (picolinate orgluconate) along with augmenting nutrientsincluding L-cysteine, pyridoxine, ascorbicacid, and vitamin E. Manganese is alsouseful in promoting proper metallothioneinfunction. If copper levels are elevated, effective treatment must also enhance therelease of copper from tissues and copperexcretion. L-cysteine helps mobilize andexcrete copper while enhancing zincabsorption. Correction of zinc deficiency isbest accomplished under the care of aphysician or nutritionist who is experiencedin metal metabolism disorders.Indiscriminate dosages of zinc to personswho do not need it can cause anaemia andimbalanced trace metals.Treatment of mild or moderate zincdepletion can take months to complete. Some cases of severe zinc depletionrequire a year or more to resolve.Achievement of a proper zinc balance isslowed by growth spurts, injury, illness, orsevere stress. In addition, persons withmalabsorption or Type A blood respond totreatment more slowly.DISCUSSIONWe find that zinc deficient individualsusually respond well to inexpensivesupplementation with zinc and augmentingnutrients. Many patients who previouslyexperienced years of counselling, psychotherapy, aggressive medicationprograms, and/or residential treatmentbecome greatly improved and respond toless intensive (and less expensive)therapies. Zinc deficiency can be corrected, but not cured. If treatment is discontinued, the prior zinc deficiency will re-emerge withall symptoms gradually returning. Zincdeficiency, like diabetes, requires life longtreatment. Fortunately, it is a simple, lowcost, safe treatment.Source: www.centeronbehaviouralmedicine.com[References available from Editor on request –Ed.]Can you Help?We are looking to spread the word about theWalsh Research Institute and the 2009 SydneyOutreach. Pfeiffer Institute, Skillman, New Jersey in 1988, wherehe worked, including a period as Acting Director, untilreturning to private practice in 1995.Dr Neubrander is passionately committed to resolvingthe problems of children with autism spectrum and otherneurodevelopmental disorders. His main current interestsare Biomedical and Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments forAutism spectrum disorders, ADD, ADHD, LanguageDelay, Apraxia and Sensory Integration Problems. He hasdeveloped numerous protocols based on BiochemicalIndividuality noted in this subset of the population. He is continuously researching the most innovativetreatment possibilities. In 2002 he discovered theprofound effect Methyl-B12 has on Autism andNeurodevelopmental disorders. Since then he hasworked with others on developing a sophisticatedprotocol for the clinical application of Methyl-B12 inthese areas. Many parents worldwide have their childrenon Dr Neubrander’s protocol that is very successful. Inhis practice 94% of children respond to this protocol.Visit his excellent website at www.drneubrander.com.Dr Mary N Megson, MDDr Megson is a developmental pediatrician in private practicein Richmond Virginia USA and also Assistant Professor ofPediatrics at The Medical College of Virginia (Richmond).Mary has worked in the field of Pediatrics for more thantwenty years. As a developmental specialist in pediatrics, she devotes her career to children with developmentalissues including ADHD, ADD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder,Developmental Delays and Asperger’s Syndrome.Dr Megson’s areas of professional interest include BehaviouralPediatrics, Child Development, Adolescent Medicine andNeonatology. Dr Megson is board certified by the AmericanBoard of Pediatrics, a Fellow of The American Academy ofPediatrics and a Member of The Society of DevelopmentalPediatrics. She travels all over the world speaking atinternational conferences.Dr Megson’s research area is use of Vitamin A and Bethanecolin the treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. She believesthat autism is both a neuroimmune and an autoimmunedisorder. In her studies of autistic children, she repeatedlyfound chronic diseases such as celiac disease, rheumatoidarthritis, insulin-dependent diabetes, IGA deficiency, andpsoriasis in the family medical histories. She is currentlyinvestigating the hypothesis that G-alpha protein defects area high-risk factor for developing autism after vaccination. Herclinical trial of 60 children suggests that inserting a G-alphaprotein defect, the pertussis toxin found in DPT vaccine, intogenetically at-risk children may be a cause of autism.Dr Megson is credited with the largest number of recoveredautistic patients in the USA (DAN Conference).
