Thekey information required is the length of wireneeded, often referred to as the length of run, andthe current load that the conductor is expectedto carry in use. Knowing the “length and load”characteristics will take the guesswork out of thechoice.Voltage drop, caused by current draw, is theprimary consideration when selecting the properconductor size. Every conductor has a certainamount of resistance per foot. The longer thedistance, the greater the resistance in the circuit.The greater the resistance, the higher the voltagedrop caused by the same current. This relationshipis defined by ohms law (Voltage = Current XResistance). As distance from the power sourceincreases, there is less voltage available to “push”the current through the wire. Thus causes thecurrent to drop. There is also heat buildup as theresistance increases, which also lessens theamount of current flow.In low voltage systems, such as vehicles, even asmall drop in voltage can have a serious effect onthe amount of light a lamp puts out. But there’s asimple solution. As you get further away from thepower source, make the conductor larger. A largerconductor means less resistance.Using the “Wire Size Chart”, first find the load inamps on the left-hand edge of the chart. Then findthe length of run across the top of the chart. Readdown that column until it intersects with the ampload line. The point at which they cross indicatesthe correct wire size for the job.© 2012 All rights reserved.
