Disinfection and Treatment<br />
The disinfection system must be installed in acc<strong>or</strong>dance with OAC Rule 3701-28-09. Current<br />
acceptable methods <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> continuous disinfection are chl<strong>or</strong>ination, iodination, ozonation, and<br />
ultraviolet (UV) light systems that meet NSF Standard 55 Class "A". A cyst reduction filter that<br />
meets NSF Standard 53 is currently required when UV is used as the means of continuous disinfection.<br />
A 1 to 2 micron cyst reduction filter is highly recommended <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> use with chl<strong>or</strong>ination,<br />
iodination, and ozone systems. These filters are designed to remove disease causing protozoa<br />
such as cryptosp<strong>or</strong>idium and giardia. The filter needs to be installed in parallel in <strong>or</strong>der to<br />
maintain a flow rate capacity of at least 10 gallons per minute.<br />
F<strong>or</strong> treatment systems using ch<strong>or</strong>ine <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> disinfection, a minimum 0.2 parts per million (ppm)<br />
chemical residual must be present in the water after 20 minutes of chl<strong>or</strong>ine / water contact in<br />
the retention tank. When iodine is used <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> disinfection, the chemical residual should be<br />
between 0.5 and 1.0 parts per million after 20 minutes of contact in the retention tank. The<br />
retention tank should be constructed with baffles <strong>or</strong> filled with pea gravel to reduce sh<strong>or</strong>t circuiting<br />
through the retention tank and to increase the retention time. The private water system<br />
contract<strong>or</strong> should provide the home owner with a chemical test kit to periodically check the<br />
chl<strong>or</strong>ine <strong>or</strong> iodine residual leaving the system. The solution reservoir must always contain chl<strong>or</strong>ine<br />
<strong>or</strong> iodine solution <strong>or</strong> the household water will not be disinfected. It is recommended that a<br />
float switch be installed in the solution tank attached to a solenoid that will shut off the water<br />
when the solution tank has gone dry. If a UV system is being used <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> disinfection, a warning<br />
device <strong>or</strong> automatic shut off solenoid is required <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> instances when the UV system is not functioning<br />
properly. However, the use of the automatic shut off solenoid is the preferred safety<br />
