design team portfolioSmart Museum of Art CourtyardUniversity of Chicago, Chicago, IllinoisSeeking to animate the existing public courtyard of theSmart Museum, UrbanLab proposed a public landscapeof varying surface “patches” that attract and supportmultiple programs and ambiances. Portions of theexisting paving were removed to make room for a morevaried palette of indigenous grasses and assorted nativepermeable ground cover. One of the patches is threedimensional -- it is a five foot high hill to be used foroutdoor classes, reading, lounging, and sun bathing.
