Nigel has an MSc in Biodiversity Conservation from BournemouthUniversity. This focused on habitat requirements for specialistbutterfly species which had become victims <strong>of</strong> environmentaldegradation. He wrote the species action plan for the Falkl<strong>and</strong>sfritillary, the Falkl<strong>and</strong>s’ only resident butterfly. He is working withBournemouth University, Butterfly Conservation, SAERI <strong>and</strong>Falkl<strong>and</strong>s Conservation to see how that can best be implemented.Nigel lives in Corfe Castle in Dorset, in the centre <strong>of</strong> the mostbiologically diverse 10 kilometre square in Britain. He is currentlyundertaking research into reasons for the decline <strong>of</strong> the Lulworthskipper butterfly.Boyd McCleary CMG CVOBoyd joined the Northern Irel<strong>and</strong> Civil Service in 1982 <strong>and</strong> served inthe Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture. In 1985, he was seconded to theDiplomatic Service as Agricultural Attaché at the British Embassy inBonn, then capital <strong>of</strong> the Federal Republic <strong>of</strong> Germany. On leavingBonn, Boyd transferred to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office <strong>and</strong>spent the next forty years on the move, serving in Seoul, Ankara,Ottawa, Düsseldorf <strong>and</strong> Kuala Lumpur before taking up theappointment as Governor <strong>of</strong> the British Virgin Isl<strong>and</strong>s (2010-14). HisLondon postings included Director <strong>of</strong> Estates <strong>and</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> Roll-outfor a major new accounting <strong>and</strong> procurement system for the FCO.Boyd has had a life-long interest in flora <strong>and</strong> fauna. As HighCommissioner in Malaysia (2006-10), he worked closely with anumber <strong>of</strong> organisations involved in researching <strong>and</strong> protecting thecountry’s environment, including the Royal Society’s South East AsiaRainforest Research Programme, which had a wonderful researchcentre in Danum Valley, Sabah.As Governor <strong>of</strong> the British Virgin Isl<strong>and</strong>s, Boyd was again heavilyengaged in conservation issues, such as the head-start programme forthe Anegada rock iguana <strong>and</strong> the eradication <strong>of</strong> non-invasive speciesto protect the magnificent frigate-bird colony on Great Tobago. Hecollaborated closely with the National Parks Trust <strong>of</strong> the VirginIsl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> local NGOs, with <strong>UKOTCF</strong> <strong>and</strong> with the Royal Societyfor the Protection <strong>of</strong> Birds <strong>and</strong> Kew Gardens.On retiring from the Diplomatic Service in 2014, Boyd moved to asmall village in Hampshire, where he aims to explore the localenvironment, while retaining an interest in wider conservation matters.
